That E-Type is drool worthy of course, but losing the soundtrack will certainly strip some of the soul (as well as the super-long ratios in the four-speed gearbox). Nice idea though.
Took my Granddad out in my Tesla at the weekend, he loved it and it's instant acceleration. He liked that it was a more futuristic version of his Jaguar XF saloon.
I could well imagine him being tempted with an electric E-type, but maybe not with such a short range as he enjoys his long drives to southern France. He used to have an E-type many many years ago, and he still wishes he'd kept it.
NOT looking forward to an electric Defender.
The E-Type is gastly and so is the future concept. Why just remake the E-type? Surely they could have done the Xj instead as that is much more a generation still able to drive/buy them?
I don't drive but if I did the E-Type would be my choice. Design seems to have gone down hill since.
The E-type is a classic, and I have been in one!! the remake will be and is gastly. Why would you want to remake it in electric? not even a hybrid with an engine. No soul. esp with those old-looking rims. The XJ? Sold more, many more. Nobody remembers the xj220? Apologies for appreciating art in it's truest form.
Yes it was a lovely looking car but does anyone know how many problems there are/were/is with the chassis alone?
Just show me a 2020 Jag that looks like a jag should in 2020, not one thats 80 years dated..
Mate I was only taking the piss. If you offered me an E-type I'd refuse it. As you point out there are loads of issues with the damn thing. You need two - one for where you are and one where you're going for when they break down. What made the E-type was the soul and passion as you rightly say and on objective criteria it is a crap car. It just looks and drives rather nicely and, I keep agreeing with you here, an electric version will strip all of this away, leaving a souless hulk.
As you rightly say, it should be a modern classic that they aim for that actually works with the EV idea and is a modern masterpeice. With the electric E-type they are just triyng to cling desperately on the coat tails of past glories. Too many design / engineering consessions will have to be made in order to keep with the classic style and to modify a ICE based car to a full EV car. Start from the ground up, make it good and make it a classic. Whatever you do with an EV E-type, it'll always be a disappointment.
"By 2020 all new Jaguars will be electric or hybrid cars"
No they won't.
They'll be available as electric or hybrid. And new *models* not new cars.
This is the same meh as Volve - their statement was that they would all be 'light' hybrids - basically the result of a 48v electrical subsystem... the purpose of which is mostly to enable the bits and pieces for autonomous driving and driver aids. They are nothing like the system used on the Prius etc.
I feel like equating the soul of a car to the rumble of its' engine is like missing the sound of the dial-up beeps when you connect to the internet.
Not noticing the headscarves...
