The apple cash cow commeth!!!
"The iPhone X will retail at approx $1000." - oh...my... god. Please stop buying these phones and the price WILL fall.
Facial recognition, on a phone, was fun for the first few days on the Microsoft 950 until you realised that, before you could adjust the phone you could just press the power and enter your pin.
lol @ the price...
Maybe the cameras are orientated in that arrangement because most people take photos in landscape mode?
Whats happened to Apple in the past 10 years is a real shame :(
They used to be in that magical zone between innovation and success - they made some of the best consumer computing devices out there with the iPhone 4 (still their best phone), the first unibody macbooks, the "cheese grater" mac pro etc. Each new product release brought something new - either from a technology/innovation standpoint or from a look/feel/quality perspective...and I was happy to pay the premium. They were even competitive on price at one point for their laptops/PCs (although never for phones :) )
Now they are just playing catchup every single year. This year's iPhone has nothing new at all. Zero, zip , nada. It's just a rectangular box thats catching up to the Galaxy S8 and even to Windows Phones (which is the real sign they are struggling to come up with ideas!!!)
What they should have done is delayed the launch until they had sorted out the screen embedded fingerprint scanner. That would have been real mass market innovation and would make the new iPhone actually desireable. There may be a miniscule change they have actually managed it and just kept it a secret..but I doubt it.
Facial recognition for phones is just not intuitive and is as gimmicky as you can get. The Iris scanner on my S8 works very well and its lightning fast..but the fact you have to hold it up to your face (or just be looking at your phone) to unlock it is so frustrating in real world use. It's great for demos and as a bit of fun, but day to day its just hugely unconvenient compared to using the fingerprint scanner.
I'm sure it will still sell out, and Apple will make millions from it...but its yet another bland, boring iPhone with nothing new, exciting or innovative. Such a shame.
A little bit of seriousness with a dashing of sarcasm. Both facial and fingerprint are beatable to various degrees but what was wrong with the finger print scanner or having one "as well as". To me this is just another case of Apple not caring about the consumer and just doing what they want and think is best.
It seems that it is only the X that may not have the fingerprint scanner. The 8 and 8+ will, together with the home button (as well as the facial recognition)
Its an incremental improvement in terms of processing power (made necessary for the facial recognition?) but as I have said before (not that that makes it true!) smartphones are essentially a mature product - any changes are going to be incremental changes to existing products, rather than any innovative breakthrough. And that is true for ALL manufacturers.
(And now waits to be proved wrong as technology predictions are invariably incorrect! :) )
I'm not so sure - I think we're going to see some big innovations around battery life, screens, and input methods. I guess they could also be called incremental too however there is plenty of room for innovation too rather than the rather boring "fifa" style update Apple have gone for this time around with no flagship features.
Screen and battery/charging tech are where I think the focus will be next. True wireless charging (where you don't need a charging mat) is racing ahead and there are commercially available prototypes that work at 1-2 meters away from a base (albeit slowly!) would be a good example, and there are companies doing amazing things with tactile screens that can dynamically change the texture of the screen to simulate buttons/braille type interfaces.
The basic form factor probably won't change for another few years but I think there is a lot more that can be done. Whether it's necessary or not is another question!
