Re: Apple iPhone X 'the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone'
Still waiting for a product that interests me. Last thing I cared about was iPod Nano gen4. And I got it second hand.
Re: Apple iPhone X 'the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone'
I like the product overall, but at the same time I'm feeling both disappointment and concern.
1) Cost. £1150 has now crossed a line in the sand and made even me (prolific buyer of shiny tech) think twice.
2) It gives me many things I want, but it also takes away things I love (like TouchID). I'm concerned that we've got FaceID simply because Samsung couldn't work out how to get TouchID under an OLED panel. So this is stop-gap.
3) Is this how things are going to be from now on.? Will in future the 8s and 8s+ be simply iPhone 6 upgrades and I have to pay well over £1000 for a decent Apple phone ?

Hm, slightly bad form to reply to myself, but I'd pulled up the HTC Magic wikipedia page to check the release date when writing the above, and I've just had a read through it. Turns out the Magic was the first touchscreen only Android smartphone...
Re: Apple iPhone X 'the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone'
One of the biggest leaps the originally iPhone made was creating a market for incredibly more expensive phones.
The X is trying to do that again.
I've also got serious reservations about the practicality of the FaceID thing. I've used Windows Hello a lot, it works very well on a desktop, on the 950 it didn't. On my Op5 as I'm pulling it out of my pocket I finger the sensor, it's unlocked before it's even been rotated to face me. It's going to be a step down compared to that experience.

The Chinese did the big screen thing first, the Xiaomi Mix is now on it's second version which was released last week for half the price of the Apple: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017...-the-mi-mix-2/
The Xiaomi Mix looked stunning when it came out nearly a year ago, amazing how fast you get used to these things :)

It was the first mass market commercially successful capacitive touch phone. Back in 2007 Android was in its infancy and it was, quite frankly, rubbish. At the time most touch phones were based on Windows Mobile 5/6/6.1 and I had a number of full touch phones in that time which were all WM.
I picked up an iphone a while after launch..when Carphone warehouse made a mistake on pricing and I got one for £169. It was revolutionary from a quality perspective first of all - the build quality was hugely better than anything HTC made at the time, but then also from a software perspective. Android was a bit rubbish from a consumer POV as mentioned earlier, and iOS really did "just work". Remember we had no app store or similar at the time.
Apple did a heck of a lot for mobile phones - often not being the first there but being the best , with a few innovations thrown in. I have been a fan as a result and during that period I owned a lot of Apple kit.
That has all changed now - each phone they release is a minor update with nothing new to the market..everything is about playing catch up to Primarily Samsung but also the Chinese suppliers like Xiaomi. The iPhone X is not "the biggest leap forward since...anything" - its a minor iteration on their current design adding a few features to keep up with the competition, and for some bizarre reason getting rid of the fingerprint sensor.
It will still sell out though - its purely a fashion thing now all the technical and "quality" reasons have gone away and faded into the background. I wouldn't have a go at anyone for buying one either - it remains a nice looking phone with good specs...but its lost a lot of the "apple magic" that used to exist.

Amazes me every year now much more they can get perf wise from the chips.
Apple designed GPU as well, wasnt expecting that so quick, Imagination techs lawyers are probably at the ready.
Fudzilla points out that if Apple had instead upgraded to the latest PowerVR design then it would have been way better than that. OK Fudzilla are clearly biased against Apple, but the numbers look sane.

I think it was Apple who forced the phone carriers to come up with sane data plans that enable these devices. If so, I thank them for that even if I don't use their phones.

They almost do it backwards, most manufacturers will take a GPU and work the software around that, Apple will now create the GPU around there software requirements which is the right way to go imo if your rich enough to be able to do it.

Indeed. It's this level of control that gives iOS such an advantage over competitors in terms of security and efficiency. Just a shame that they are now so flipping expensive. Not sure why I'm so bothered about this price, but for some reason it's really grating on me.
Re: Apple iPhone X 'the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone'
Early adopter premium, I expect once they move to LG for the screens the price will come down and perhaps that screen will become the norm.

I'm worried that it's more than that. They've effectively created a new level of phone and it would be quite possible that this is now a regular feature. Next year 8s, 8s+ and 10+.

8 and 8s are out now - but most of the media attention has been on the X. The 8 is an incremental advance on the 7, faster processor, face recognition and retains fingerprint recognition and the home button.

And that's exactly my worry. That the 10 has become a new band. So in future £600 -- £900 gets you a phone which looks and feels dated, whilst the modern 10 series costs well in excess of £1000.
Re: Apple iPhone X 'the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone'
They are just copying the xiaomi mi box.

I doubt there is any significant functionality that could be removed from the old GPU. The advantage for Apple here is mainly going to be in reducing license payments, though in the short term at least I would have thought the patent fees will be pretty harsh.
Intel roll their own GPU as well, let's hope Apple can at least do a better job than that.
