With the cost of SSD's dropping is that the main focus of HDD platter based drives now, NAS and bulk storage?

Yup. HDDs can't compete with SSDs on speed, but trounce them on cost per gigabyte.

SSDs are rising in cost. I picked up a Sandisk Ultra II 480GB and a Sandisk X300 512GB about 22 months ago for £85 and £90.

Re: WD announces 14TB HDD; Seagate responds with 12TB models
nice! £400 for a starting price for 12tb isn't bad, but too much for me. i wonder how long till the prices come down a bit. it's only a matter of time till 14tb drives will become affordable. i'm still hoping they can use this technology to make some 2.5" 9mm drives to boost laptop capacity as there's been no increase in capacity for a long time since being stuck at 2tb. sure you can get 4tb and 5tb but 15mm high

I can see it now .... 24hrs to copy off the data and then it dies a month later .. ARGH! Cost almost £1000 to get them in raid too!

Pretty sure you'd want these to be RAID-6 / Z2 at least. The rebuild/resilvering times would be (I'm guessing) immense.

You'd be right. I had to replace a dead drive on my homemade 16x3TB Z2 array.
It took FOUR DAYS (96-ish hours) to resilver 3TB of data!

We're seeing a bit of a spike currently but the trend over the long term is still downwards :)

4 days! What CPU do you have backing that?
