Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

Well so far I've had a PC, laptop and a tablet pc attempt to do the update and all failed to complete the update and reverted back to the old installation. Not terribly impressed with it so far.

My 2 home built PCs went through it yesterday with no issues.

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

does this update modify the Hosts file?
because Avira blocked a few attempts to modify Hosts at the 95% or so 'preparing to install updates' mark on Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709.

hopefully not borked the install, so when it restarts it doesn't go into a BSOD loop.

    sure it'll be fine though....

    edit: seems to be fine.

theres a new 'People' link next to the notification area - can link to contacts on the taskbar.
and a Phone - link to android/iPhone appeared in settings. edge has updated too.
not had to update drivers again yet.

also another update KB4041994 has appeared wanting to be installed. no info on what that is.

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

Overall, it's been okay. Windows feels snappier and some programs seem to load quicker. I've only had two hiccups. My soundblaster software needed to be reinstalled due to the fact that my headphones didn't work and also I keep randomly keep getting an nvidia overlay message, so I probably need to reinstall geforce experience.
    Facts don't exist, only interpretations.

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

Installed the update via Windows Update without any issues last night. Playing a few games and using Lightroom/Photoshop has been flawless so far, will try my Oculus Rift tonight to see if that works as before. So far so good, although other than OneDrive placeholders I'm not seeing many features that are useful for me.

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

Looks like this throws all the gaming benchmarks out of the window. Ryzen at least gains a few FPS apparently, so I have to wonder if this is just scheduler improvements and Coffeelake gets gains as well. Or is this just better thread migration control within/across a CCX?

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

Got it last night on my A8-7870K HTPC and failed twice on restart, so not overly excited to bite the bullet and see what cockup it does to my main machine, so only option is a clean install on HTPC and see what happens.

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

Installed with no issues either. Was also pinged when I wished to restart the computer, not sure if that was in a previous or current update which was a welcomed touch!

Literally have no qualms with Windows 10. :]

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

Interesting to see the improvement to Ryzen (I have one) and the game mode possible improvements.

I installed yesterday trepidatiously, everything seems fine slightly snappier I think. Haven't really gamed much. No problems and nice to be back up to date after skipping creators update.

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

Just updated. It partially wiped some nvidia profile settings (desktop colour and frame rate cap), and authorised itself to bypass bitlocker during reboot, which was mildly naughty. A new "people" icon appeared on the taskbar, which I disposed of before I could even figure out what it was for.

By far the most alarming act it committed though was, upon finishing, to open a window of something called "edge".

Edge is the replacement for the browser choice window in older windows versions. You use it to select the Web browser you want to use and download it. After that you don't need to bother with it again.

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

Well I was originally on Win10 Anniversary, then went back to 8.1 PRO for a few months when the SSD went kaput and now finally got around to upgrading to Win10 Fall Creators update.

With FO4 and game mode enabled I seemed to have gained a few FPS here and there in settlements over the previous versions I have used with my IB Core i7. So far, that is not a bad result!!

    Wow!!

I wonder if Nvidia cards see the same improvements??

If so,that is one decent Windows update!!

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update arrives

I am really surprised less people are commenting on this - even on Reddit and OcUK people are seeing good gains in certain games, and certain hardware configurations.

    Some threads on it:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comm...wing_up_to_20/
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comment...g_performance/

Seems, what I saw with FO4 is probably true:

People in other threads are talking about this in other threads I saw someone get a 15 fps increase in Battlefield 1 on a 970. https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/co...legit/dom1rt7/
Personally the only game I've tried since the update is Fallout 4 and I went from around 45 to 55 FPS in Diamond City.
Edit: I was able to push Battlefield 1 to a resolution Scale of 125% at 1080p and still keep a locked 60fps. This was due to about a 10 fps increase over the 70fps I was getting before.
Gave this a try in Battlefield 1 Multiplayer, Frontlines on Amiens, and I noticed a significant improvement. It is not a perfect test, but I was able to go to the biggest problem areas of the map, while they were populated, multiple times. I believe I was getting around 15 more FPS(~20%ish) with my current settings. I was able to get 'playable'(never below 60) frame rates on settings that that were 'unplayable' just a few days ago.
I did notice issues with borderless mode however. Alt tabbing and the origin overlay becoming active both KILLED(15fps locked) the fps until changed into full screen. These issues were only with Borderless Windowed. It is possible this is an Issue with G-Sync.
EDIT: PUBG runs about the same but I think the low end fps is better because the game felt smoother and I had less stutter
I will update this post later when I try more games, but I won't have real benchmarks. CPU + GPU: i7-870@4.0 + Nvidia GTX 970@1500+Mem@3750 ***math
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Planetside/...fall_creators/

Ok guys I have a hypothesis on why this is happening.
This update is supposed to improve SMT/Hyperthreading handling and control CCX latency (on Ryzen CPUs). So I'd wager your performance would improve in these scenarios:
    You've previously been CPU bound
    Your CPU has SMT/Hyperthreadding
Your CPU has more than 2 cores / 4 threads
If and only if you meet those conditions, then:
Your average performance increase is around 10-20%, but your minimum frame rates could be much higher (20-30%)
If you have a Ryzen CPU your performance increase may be even larger.
So PS2 seems to have improvements too. Basically my two most CPU bound games have shown improvements with this update!!

The biggest improvement I noticed in FO4 was that even when I hit the lowest FPS in my largest settlements the stutter that could happen at times has been significantly reduced.
