True, but at what point does a bot become just another player?

And having said that, your statement appears false anyway.. its going to become even easier to detect bots, just like when a "bot" pops up in COD and no one can even touch it because its simply too good.

If anything, an undetectable bot would be one that was pretty much perfectly average, no better or worse than its human counterparts

No way to programatically detect them and once they become good, they will learn how to disguise themselves as players.

As far as my understanding of bots goes, it seems that making a smart bot dumber is the hardest possible thing to do convincingly. Variable intelligence? Sounds space age-y. Most implementations of trying to "dumb down" a bot thus far simply introduce flat rules, handicaps, etc?

I agree with that. I've heard actors\actresses say that it takes an expert to play a novice such as pretending to not be able to ski at all.

Not really, getting kicked off would be just another 'undesirable outcome' factor the AI will account for, so it'll down-weight the plays it made before getting kicked off and it'll settle on a play style that lets it win and not get kicked off. The end result of teaching itself the game will be an AI player that's indistinguishable from a grand master player.
