It is all very impressive and all, but what is the point in the high amount of stream processors and use of HBM if the clock speed and physical amount of ram isn't going to be enough to run anything that would really benefit from it?

It's probably to early to know if that's going to be the clock speed at launch, i would imagine it's an engineering sample that's having to meet a certain thermal envelope.

Re: AMD APU with 1792 stream processors spotted

AMD have a wide range of "extra" RAM techologies (including virtual memory dedicated to GPU etc) so my guess is 2GB of HBM on die, with the ability to use system RAM to supplement for software needing more (bear in mind that the existing APUs use system RAM for everything). Add in the various compression things implemented in the HBM-aware generations, and it shouldn't be much of a compromise. This should make for a really nice mid-range setup without the need for dedicated GPU etc.

Could be very interesting if it includes the HBCC.

@EvilCycle - And how the hell do you conclude that the clock speed and RAM isn't going to be enough? Ridiculous!

New desktop APU will be able to offer gaming at 1080p resolutions then and not just for e-sports.

Re: AMD APU with 1792 stream processors spotted

This is great news! Its possibly a superior alternative to the Intel EMIB Core-Radeon using the semi-custom AMD Vega GPU, which would have 24 to 28 CUs.

AMD should be able to optimize Ryzen and Vega far better than Intel can - especially if it is on a single silicon die. A desktop Ryzen Zeppelin die should have more space and heat dissipation capacity than the Mobile Ryzen silicon die too.

It isn't that it's not going to be enough for it's use, but rather that those usage scenarios are not going to need that many stream processors or HBM memory to succeed, but that is purely speculating against that current clock speed and ram amount in a PC/Laptop environment. The tech itself could be great with big speeds and volumes of ram, for example, in games consoles as mentioned above.

I'm fairly ignorant about Sandra, but I wonder if it could be the new Intel CPU, and it is just the AMD graphics that is being reported as AMD.

Re: AMD APU with 1792 stream processors spotted

I imagine these will be launched in early Q1 to avoid a clash with the Ryzen 2018 chips in February? If they are 14nm and not 12nm?
