I don't think they ever ended the normal free upgrade path as only 2 weeks ago I activated a clean install of windows 10 using the OEM windows 7 pro license key I had on the laptop without any issues at all and have activated many others since the proposed free upgrade period ended.
Re: Windows 10 free assistive technologies upgrades live on
I did a valid Win 7 to Win 10 upgrade on 31st December just in case ;)

They took a page out of Winrar's book ;p

If that copy of Windows was originally upgraded during the free upgrade period then the key will be registered with MS as valid for Win 10 installs, and you'll have no issues using it to install Windows 10 on the machine the OEM license is valid for.
If you're using the key to install Windows on another machine, or on multiple machines simultaneously, then you're breaching the EULA and could be liable to legal action anyway, whether it technically works or not....

They've now updated the date and it now expires on 16th Jan 2018.

Yeah, two machines 'upgraded' then rolled back, don't actually mind Windows 8(.1) tbh, works fine, junkware doesn't get installed by Windows Update, you know, what you expect from an OS.

8.1 with a few tweaks is honestly pretty decent. Replace the start menu and I'd take it over W10 any day.

I'm sure that's because they allowed a valid Win 7 key to be used against a Win 10 OS license?

The machines I upgraded after the official free upgrade period had never had Windows 10 installed before and the license keys I used are what shipped with the device(s) in question and had never been used to upgrade before so I'm pretty sure Microsoft are just allowing anyone to continue to upgrade for free to increase its user base and thus attract more users to other services like the windows store, OneDrive etc
From what I can recall you can't use the same OEM key to activate more than one device as it gets linked to the hardware profile of the machine it gets activated on.
