This *really* reminds me of the early days of features like Hardware T&L (Geforce 1/2 era) and fixed function Pixel/Vertex shaders (Gefore 3/4 era). By the time the tech matures and the number of games using it goes beyond "count on your fingers", there's new hardware (ie. performance) or a new API which makes the first gen parts almost completely redundant.
Until the tech is baked into consoles (and standardised) etc, it probably won't become mainstream enough for it to be a standard part of developers' workflow, so this really is the bloodiest of bleeding edge.
Also, one thing that strikes me with the tech-demos is that they often show effects (eg. reflections) not rendering with RTX off, yet games have been fudging reflections very effectively for years, so it is hard to believe that devs are suddenly *not* going to do things they've been doing (and engines have been offering) just because you can now RTX it?!

I can see the difference in some of the extreme COD MW examples, but some I really can't tell at all.
Yes....and almost certainly much more, given whati see in current rtx games @ 1440p. Looking forward to the Metro DLC in particular here, and this might just be enough of an incentive to get me to buy another COD, give it one last chance...
To those stating they can't see a difference - it depends on the game and scene, but in the top 3 that I played the most of current gen RTX titles - BFV, Tomb Raider & Metro Exodus, the difference is huge. BFV shows it off the best imo (particularly on reflection heavy maps) and Metro a close second. It's certainly not a "have to look for it" type of effect when well implemented, but it is scene dependant.

Doom Eternal is meant to be getting RTX ray tracing after launch too. Probably in 2020.
I was thinking along these lines when it first came out. I wonder if the ray-tracing specific hardware will become unnecessary in a few years when they (GPU engineers in general) "re-unify" it with the GPU cores in one way or another, having the same benefits as the unification of vertex and pixel shaders of old.
Don't get me wrong - the lighting is more natural, the ambience is better, but it's been faked so well this days that from an end-user point of view the benefits are questionable.

Still not impressed... especially considering how it impacts the fps.
The developers of ACC hit the nail on the head for me when they said "there is no reason to steal development resources and time for a very low frame rate implementation."
Why would a developer divert resources for something that's only used by a minority of customers and results in lower performance.
I know enthusiasts expect to pay for the new features but this is one feature that really does not justify the price tag.
Unless someone comes out with a game-changing new way to fab (and increase the power of) GPUs, I fail to see this ever taking off. If we were getting the same gains for the same £££ as 5-10 years ago, then yes it would become standard pretty rapidly but at the current rate of performance/£, its dead in the water IMO.
