Long overdue! I wonder how it's measured - minimum speed to one speed checker (that the ISP knows and can give priority to over other traffic) isn't the same as the speed you'll get to useful sites
And therein lies the problem! The only speed that the ISP can guarantee or has any control over is the speed of the connection to their internet gateway. Using something like speedcheck is pointless because there are too many variables. It will be line speed that will be guaranteed.Quote:

Since BT Wholesale has its own speed checker (that, when I've used it, generally agrees with a spread of results from speedtest.net) I'd imagine that anything from a BT reseller - and maybe even LLU companies - could use that. Hopefully Ofcom will actually specify what the required test is, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one...
The BT speed checker does measure the line speed, rather than to an arbitary server, so that is likely to be the test for guaranteed speed.
Meh - Just means they'll all just lower the minimum speed to the same new lower amount. (For example - I Was told 25Mb, I'll probably now be told 20Mb just to be safe.). I just rather have faster broadband...
I think the longer term goal is to force pricing on the actual speed - whether it will do that is another matter - the trouble with legislation like this is that it can unintended consequences - like pushing up prices for higher speeds.Quote:
