Re: White House publishes video games violence compilation

I love this, this shows Trump is massive <expletive> with an agenda and doesn't give a <expletive> what anyone else thinks or says:

"numerous scientific studies establishing that there is no connection between video games and violence".

    After exiting the meeting:

"the President acknowledged some studies have indicated there is a correlation between video game violence and real violence."

He is no different to a fundamentalist anti-vaxxer that has latched onto an idea and will not let anyone shake their belief in their own notion.

    Unbelievable.

Humm.. I bet nobody pointed out that crappy parents who do not:-

    1. Follow the ratings on games and films
    2. Review content themselves
    3. Educate their children on reality vs fiction
    4. Use games as a babysitter without further toughts

Are way more to blame than any game EVER!

Well considering in the US you can actually buy most of the weapon types showed in contemporary military FPS games set in modern times, why bother with virtual guns when you can fire the same gun in your backyard?? Oh well.

    Edit!!

OTH, hopefully Bethesda will make the next Fallout less about having to kill everybody(expects to be downvoted for this) so silver linings and all that!!

Re: White House publishes video games violence compilation

I guess they've realised their mistake as the videos not listed on the White House channel anymore, probably won't be long before it's removed.

I think we should do what Mr Trump says and take peoples guns away without due process.

Re: White House publishes video games violence compilation

I'm wondering what the purpose of that video is. I don't believe anyone within the games industry has denied that a lot of games contain violence? Any more than the film industry has. I do note that both the ESA and Trump have mentioned that there are studies that show games do/don't cause increases in violence, I hope they'll both publish exactly which studies they're citing so we can all take a look at them.

I also can't see anything on that White House statement page or elsewhere outlining next steps from this meeting. Further meetings? Investigations? Further research?

As I said in the other thread as a gamer if there is any scientific, peer-reviewed evidence that gaming may cause violence I want to know about it. So far all I see is publicity stunts and hot air.

Re: White House publishes video games violence compilation

The problem is Trump made a big U-turn after the NRA met with him a week ago:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...ing-president/

This is the issue, when the NRA spent at least $31 million on Trump's campaign and tactics against Hilary Clinton,so its another case of lobbying putting pressure on US politicians.

How the President’s views on gun control have changed over time”

2000 Trump wrote: “I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons”

December 2012 Trump supported President Obama’s remarks about tighter gun restrictions following the Sandy Hook shooting, saying Mr Obama has “spoken for me and every American”

May 2016 Trump said “I don’t want to have guns in classrooms… Although in some cases teachers should have guns in classrooms, frankly”

June 2016 In the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Trump tweeted “I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns”

June 2016 Just days later, Trump promised voters he would “save your Second Amendment*”

August 2016 “Hilary wants to abolish the Second Amendment. If she gets to pick her Judges, there’s nothing you can do folks, although the Second Amendment people maybe there is.. I don’t know”

April 2017 I will never ever infringe on the right of the people to keep and bear arms

October 2017 Following the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history in Las Vegas, Trump’s comment when asked about gun control was ‘we’ll be talking about gun laws as time goes by’

February 2018 Trump failed to explicitly mention gun control following the Florida school shooting, instead pledging to “tackle the difficult issue of mental health”

Late-February 2018 Suggesting that law enforcement authorities should have the power to seize guns from individuals who could present a danger without first going to court, Trump told a group of lawmakers: "I like taking the guns early. Take the guns first, go through due process second." He also told them: "Some of you people are petrified of the NRA. You can’t be petrified."

The odd thing is that the video looks more educational than violence inducing.

Re: White House publishes video games violence compilation

I bet at one time violence in public was blamed on; gory gothic novels, realism in films, rap/rock music. I think people clearly distinguish between fiction and reality, even in gaming. In fact I think having a virtual place to act out (currently enjoying being Trevor, GTA V), is beneficial. And 99.9999% percent of gamers don't become shooters, because they aren't psychopathic.

The US needs to stop looking for scapegoats, and look into the psychology of shooters, who often see their actions as payback against biased and often corrupt system. If someone with psychological problems is ignored(when they have a grievance, say bullying, or are alienated), then the line between fiction and reality does gets blurred.
