Am I only the only one who thinks the idea of a notch is dumb? I get wanting extra screen space but why not just squeeze the top bezel thinner (The width of the camera/speaker -a bout 5mm) rather than have a weird notch that gets in the way???
    Trust

    Laptop : Dell Inspiron 1545 with Ryzen 5500u, 16gb and 256 NVMe, Windows 11.

Cause its easier to sell a fad than something which actually does something useful??

It's a wow thing I guess...but it can be used to increase real estate. If you go totally thin bezels then how do you put an earphone for example, on the top? Proximity sensor? Camera?
You could of course get rid of the earphone I guess and make it bluetooth headset only (I beat you to it Apple don't ya dare) but that's a step too far for most people. Sony have tried with inscreen speakers (well make the panel act like a speaker) but I reckon a notch is easier and probably better. Just an example, the S9 has stereo front speakers...no place for them unless you have a notch or bezels

Did they do that on a phone? I was looking at an LG OLED that had this, and it worked quite well - I think maturing that tech a bit should make notches useless - and a pop-up selfie camera

Much bigger screen though. Remember someone else has done it in a phone but not who. And pop up selfie camera has been done this year, but again can't remember who

Think I spotted it in a Huawei laptop, would suit me as I rarely use the user-facing camera anyway

Why not just have a screen over the entire surface with just a dot cut out for the camera and speaker.

Have you seen the size of a speaker? That's why there is a notch....
