ISTR the Volvo XC90 usually has MobilEye safety systems fitted, so it isn't surprising they are trying to distance themselves. In fact, if Uber had disabled a better pedestrian protection system that usually came with the car in favour of their one which clearly just didn't work here then the lawyers will have a field day.
Is it just me that thinks Intel is being more than a little crass using this as a PR stunt?
Volvo already confirmed on BBC news that it's safety systems had been disabled.
Not sure about lawyer field day. Volvo isn't Ferrari who you have to sign contract with to "not modify cars or do anything to upset la Ferrari name". I imagine having both systems on at same time would be impossible without volvo involvement. So uber had modified the car and boom. Volvo just puts out statement it had nothing to do with them and case closed.
I was thinking more of the victim's family vs Uber. You are quite right, and after the Mobileye falling out with Tesla I doubt Mobileye would want to help anyone interface with their systems so I imagine they were all ripped out. But from a simplified view, a car that shouldn't be able to run someone over was modified to run someone over.
i'll NEVER support Uber
Just another nail in the coffin of Uber and "Self driving cars". Yet another death caused by a rogue vehicle while the operator was being even more lazy and stupid and inattentive than most drivers today are.
When are people going to pull their heads out of their asses and realize that safe, reliable self driving cars are a decade away at least. When are people going to realize that we need stricter road laws and driving license requirements. Get the stupid, young, and distracted people off the road and it'll be a safer place for everyone.
Uber should be held criminally liable. The operator of that vehicle should be charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and manslaughter. Period. End of story.
