I think a lot of the anti-'patriarchy' and 'return of the repressed' politics is naive(I read hard left politics and some feminist tomes as part of my degree). You can't re write culture or history to suit an idealistic ideology. I laugh at their attempts at identity politics.
Interestingly gaming offers a chance to play as a character; an Eastern European immigrant to USA in GTA 4, a young black hacker in WD2 or even a female character in Skyrim. Does that put some people off these games, like it seems to certain tv networks or services?
No, I don't know what he's referring to, which is why I asked for proof of what he was saying. Which so far he hasn't provided.

Apparently it's called 'gender and race washing'. Often it alienates real fans of shows or films. It's akin to a symbolic recolonisation of culture, as proponents see it. Personally I prefer a new approach for changing times. A good part of that Black Mirror episode 'USS Callister' has a feminist sub text, but it's handled with humour and wit, especially aimed at the outdated Kirk inspired captain, as a representation of patriarchy.
But the real reason is marketing. How do they revamp an old series on it's last legs, or remake a film, to appeal to a diminishing audience----'gender or race washing'. Easier and cheaper than coming up with new and exciting ideas.
