Helium because its smaller, lighter and hugely less reactive than Nitrogen.
The heads fly over the platters on a cushion of gas, so the drive needs some gas in there. You could try low pressure air (or low pressure pure nitrogen would be slightly better) but a big pressure difference with the outside world is going to be harder to seal against. Helium at atmospheric pressure is quite a nice solution really.Quote:
