My dad has a Moto G5 and he does like it however it has only had one system update since he got it and is still on android N. My mum has had a nokia 5 since xmas and has always got the monthly security patch within the same month and is currently on android 8.0 I will reccomend my dad to go for a nokia next time round is the updates keep at the current pace.

Hopefully Motorola would roll out updates faster for the G6 but I'm not holding my breath...
    from https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018...moto-g6-and-e5

The 2018 G and E phones all come with Android 8.0 Oreo, but the update situation is pretty sad. The Moto G phones are promised one major OS update, to Android P. The E phones are not guaranteed an OS update. Neither will get monthly security updates, but instead security releases will come "every 60-90 days."
So basically after a year you will be using a custom rom instead. I suggest starting here. https://forum.xda-developers.com/

You could spend an extra £50 and get the Nokia 7 plus.
It's part of the Android one program so gets updates almost straight away, guaranteed OS updates for 2 years and security updates for 3 years.
It's getting very good reviews especially on the camera which is very cabable in low light which most midrange phones fail at.

Had Moto G1 and now using a Moto G4. I might get a Moto G6+ if I find it on sales. I am really impressed and happy with these phones.

So they seem to have shifted the the Moto G series into the Moto E, while turning the G name into the X series...if that makes any sense.

Well, there was the X4 last year, but rather than being the flagship of old, it was decidedly middle ground, and is now available for £200 at CPW, which seems quite a good price. But there are no announcements for a new model, I think maybe Moto have saturated the middle market...
