Re: AMD Zen CPU architect Jim Keller becomes an SVP at Intel
Old Intel used to hate the man.
He clearly doesn't want to ever become a piece of the furniture at any company he works for, once he's got a product to a stage that the rest of the team can continue without him he leaves to his next venture.
Re: AMD Zen CPU architect Jim Keller becomes an SVP at Intel
Jim Keller looks just like Ian Beale.

More details now on the Intel blog
Re: AMD Zen CPU architect Jim Keller becomes an SVP at Intel
So, more cores at Intel soon?
Re: AMD Zen CPU architect Jim Keller becomes an SVP at Intel
Well all I can say from what I see is that AMD must be doing something Correct, if INTEL hire them when there contract conditions end!.

[plucked from the air]
This news is already frazzling the brains of people who treat CPU companies like fundamentalist religions.

WHAT, WHAT?! Jim at INTEL?! Hell has frozen over! This is going to result in amazing products, or turn out to be a very bad situation. "Time will tell" I suppose.

No mention of his work on the DEC 21264, the chip that probably made his reputation. Jim is working for the company that own the rights to the DEC Alpha now, I wonder if he can find a reason for getting one built :D

Came here to say that, his work on the DEC Alphas was what built his reputation, and he has gone from strength to strength. He is a genius when it comes to chip design and technology. I also think he co wrote x64 instruction set.

Working on AMD64 must be very much "the day job" after proper modern instruction sets like Alpha and to some degree ARM V8 though. Not that I imagine he gets involved in the nitty gritty of gate level design these days.

His high level design overview is probably all that is needed for his brilliance to shine. Certainly going to be very interesting to see what now comes out of Intel in 18 to 24 months time.
Re: AMD Zen CPU architect Jim Keller becomes an SVP at Intel
Does this mean that Intel didn't actually have a bunch of next generation architectures sitting on a shelf and they need someone external to bring new life to Intel?
Or did they have a bunch of next generation architectures sitting on a shelf that Intel are worried will not have long term competition against AMDs vigor?

Pretty sure that even 24 months is way too little time. Zen1 launched last year, yet Keller had started back with AMD back in 2012. While, of course, AMD were massively resource constrained 2012 to 2017 is 5 years.
I would not expect Intel to release anything in which Keller has had major input until after 2022.

til then enjoy those incremental increases and high TDPs trying to keep competitive with the multicore zen disturbers, while doing anything to keep a lead in single thread. Not that Ryzen is perfect, but can you imagine if its single thread had been higher? Ooof.
