QOTW: Are you buying a new TV for the World Cup?

If the World Cup was being broadcast for free in 4K I would be interested in watching a little bit just to see the tech in actions - I did see a very impressive 4K football match demo in John Lewis once.

But I'm guessing that will have to wait for 2022. Or, more likely, 2026.

I think Saracen has subconsciously made me put my cynical hat on again.

Also, I got a new 4k telly about 18 months ago, and I haven't gone past the wife's NTU, which is the well known SI unit, the New Telly Unit, currently about 6 or 7 years.

You need to quote viewing distances, ask her if she wants to be sitting 6" from the telly to get the full effect. And then when she says 'why do we need a new telly then?", you're on your own. Unless you 'accidentally' break the old one...

And bezels. Back in the day, bezels were at least 50% of the screen size, so you could get a 48" and it would have the same overall size. Maybe.

In the context of players playing for their clubs, I'd agree with you. Players aren't paid to play for their countries though, they play only for pride. And to kick each other and roll around in agony

Already bought a Bravia 49EX9005 a couple of months ago. In my case it was to watch F1 in 4K though (and other stuff in due course, as the range of content slowly improves).

And before all you sport haters start again, I couldn't give a rat's ass if you like F1 or not. I like it, so I choose to watch it

Who's a sports hater? I hate football, and have no interest in many other sports, but SOME I do watch. Used to include F1, but got bored years ago. I still watch a lot of bike racing, especially MotoGP, and World and British Superbikes .... but I wouldn't buy a new TV for that, either.

A better QOTW might have been about buying a new TV to watch the next premiere event of your favourite sport, but it's a bit of a gob-full.

As for F1, why I got bored with it is another thread (and been done before, IIRC) but I regard choice of sport to follow as being like favourite music, or foods you do/don't like - my reaspns are good enough for me, but nobody else will give a hoot if, or why, I don't like horseradish.

I think I had the same telly. The B7020, but 40", I actually measured it, and the diagonal was the same as the 49" we ended up getting, so you should easily get away with a 55". I would have pushed it, but the legs were too wide for our telly stand. And trying to get a new telly stand and a new telly past the wife? Not when you chuck in a new 4k BD player as well (discounted, almost more expensive not to buy it...)

Wait is buying a new tv for a major sporting event a thing? Who in the hell does that?

Major sporting events often acts as a showcase for new live broadcasting technologies.

And it's a shame the Beeb won't be broadcasting in 4K (as per news on 15th May). So folks may as well stick to their old shoddy tellies.

However, World Cup or not I would say upgrade your telly regardless. Watching your 4K Bluray and Netflix 4K/HDR shows really is a huge improvement. You only have to watch Blue Planet II in 4K to see why upgrading to see why upgrading is a good thing.

I've already got an LG 43UH661V 43 inch Ultra HD telly. It's lovely.

Tech support time:
On occasions watching things via Xbox One X. I get the image flickering on and off. Sometimes I get "Invalid Format". Turning the telly off/on will resolve it. But I don't know if it's the telly, the cable or the Xbox.

Anyone else get this?

In any case, I got a new one last year that does UHD and HDR, so no worries !

We bought a TV. A big shiny 65" Samsung QLED.

It's all the bells and whistles with 4K UHD and HDR1000, lovely for watching the footy on BBC iPlayer in UHD.

Got ourselves a Samsung soundbar to go with it, the quality is glorious.
