If ever there was an excuse to splash out on that 65in OLED...
I could see why somebody would buy a new TV that needs replacing to coincide with a major event, but I can never understand people that already have a good TV but splash out for a bigger one just to watch the footy, why not just get some tickets to go and see a game or go down the pub? In short my answer is no and never will!
Nope. TVs are like fridges, they get replaced when they break.
I didn't even realise this was a World Cup year.
World Cup?? what do you drink with it??
Erm, no. I'd totally forgotten that it was even happening... A 'touch' redundant this week Hexus.
The last reason to buy a television for is to watch football
or soaps
or reality tv
or talent shows
or ...
No.
I did buy a 3D TV just in time for the Doctor Who 3D special all those years ago. Was going to buy one anyway, but that pushed the schedule forward a bit and forced me to wire it up to a satellite lnb as fast as I could in time for the show. Shame it was the last 3D content the BBC did :D
But even then, I was going to buy one anyway as part of a house move and a need for a second set.
No. Not something I'll be watching.
(but there may be some bargains when its all over!)
No.
This isn't it..Quote:

Nope. Bought my 65" OLED in the sales leading up to Black Friday. Still stupid expensive, but lost in the immense costs of a house extension to put it in. :D
Good for gaming and films, mind. Makes the 32" in the lounge seem small...
Sadly OLED still has too many issues, uniformity, burn in, brightness not really good enough for daylight viewing, motion judder. Sony is the only make that has judder free motion and not interested in the A1 and the AF8 needs to drop in price. Looking more and more likely my next TV will not be OLED.
Spend a lot of money on a new TV to watch a bunch of overpaid, badly behaved, immature pansies kicking a ball? Sod off!
Really? Have you actually had one? I've got an LG 55" OLED in the lounge and a 65" one in my office, and haven't noticed any of those issues, in fact when the HDR/Dolby Vision kicks in it can be almost too bright. The office one was bought to replace a projector, now THAT had issues in daylight.
Absolutely - OLED is really needed to make the most of HDR - it has a much better dynamic range and really good blacks. A friend has the LG55" Ultra HD and the sense of 3D is amazing simply because of the visual clues you get from the definition and dynamic range - and without the artificiality the stereoscopic 3D introduced.
It would be the TV I would buy if I had the space (but not to watch the world cup thingy on - which I won't be watching on anything!)
It isn't. It's next year!
But, no, I won't be buying a new TV.
This has got to be the easiest QOTW ever and the answer is no. I do not like football.
I don't even watch football, never-mind buying a completely new TV just for it. I have already have a 4K TV and I'm quite happy with it.
No, especially as I have absolutely no interest in sport.
But I am also waiting to see how good the NVidia big screen tv's are before I decide on an upgrade.
My TV is just a big display for games anyway.
Well let me think, eh my current TV isn't broken so why would a football competition make me buy a new one? No.
Well, assuming "World Cup" means football, and not somethibg far more interesting, like, oh, pottery decorating, then perhaps my general reaction to football, which is either to grab the remote and change channel, or to clamp my eyes shut, clap my hands over my ears and run screaming from the room, might suggest my answer.
Put it this way. I'd rather have root canal surgery while my bare-naked rear-end was forced down onto a fire-ant nest, and Spice Girls ..... no wait, Atomic Kitten, songs were played non-stop, than watch football. Sorry about the imagery there.
So, will I be buying a TV for it? On balance, after careful consideration .... probably not.
There's a better chance of me buying a Win10 PC, to use Google to sign up for as much junk mail as I can find, while simultaneously putting all my personal information, including bank passwords, online in public. That is, ummm, no.
I am in the market for a new tv, Have been for about 2 years. Still on 52inch Sonia Bravia from 2006.
Problem is I would not buy an OLED, Way too much baby sitting it so you don't get burn in.
Just wouldn't work for me and the way I watch and use TV.
Do love the Sony 65inch Z9D, Just hoping they release a gen 2 of it in the next year or so with latest HDMI and and all the other latest tech. Tend to make tv last a long time so I want it with main features that will stand the test of time.
This top end Bravia is still perfect 12 years later, I doubt the same will be with OLED!
Well, I suppose if you like looking at a bright static image for hours at a time, you might get some temporary image retention, but the risk of long term damage is extremely low - much less than for plasma displays.
And if there is any short term retention, it can be easily fixed.
http://televisions.reviewed.com/feat...mage-retention
It’s technlogy I’d be looking at if I was in the market for a new TV.
Only if England reach the final....so, no, I'm not even thinking about buying a new TV for the World Cup.
Nope - might upgrade the projector though
Not a chance, I have ZERO interest in football.
Came here expecting snobby anti-football replies.
Wasn't disappointed.
Wait is buying a new tv for a major sporting event a thing? Who in the hell does that?
Hell no! can't think of anything worse than watching football.
Nope, for one I have no real interest in the world cup (or football in general) and the tv I have now are more than good enough for what I use them for. Now if it was broken and needed replacing then yeah I'd go out and get one but it wouldn't be 'just because' something is happening.
Nope. 22 grown men kicking something round around a field does not garner my interest. If you enjoy football and it's a good enough excuse to spend on an upgrade though, good luck.
QOTW: Are Nexus running out of QOTW?
As Peter said, no snobbishness. But contrary to what many football fans seem to think, not everybody shares their enthusiasm.
In my case, it dates back to school sports. I have NO interest in team games. Didn't then, don't now. But it didn't stop several years worth of school sports teachers trying their best, by making me play. Well, making me go out on the field, anyway. Anyhow, it bred a growing, and eventually seething resentment. I remember one teacher telling me "stand there, mark that spot". So I did. 20 minutes later the ball rolled past me about a 18 inches outside my reach. I ignored it. Teacher called me a rude name and asked why I didn't play it. "Because you told me to mark this spot, and I couldn't reach it.
About then, a teacher discovered that if they got me doing tennis squash, swimming, cross-country, hell even fencing (foil and epee, not the things keeping intruders out of fields) I was right up for it. I ended up county standard at fencing.
But from that day to this, I have zero interest in cricket, rubgy, etc, at vehemently loathe football because several football loving sports teachers used it to try to force me to do what they wanted, and I have hated them for it, and similarly football, ever since.
Nothing snobbish about it. I just loathe it .... which is a reaction many football fans, including many in my family, just can't seem to understand.
Considering that as a nation England are crap (Scotland, Wales and NI are even crappier) and that the much vaunted Premier League is populated with more foreigners than English players i am surprised that most football lovers do like it as most fans are bigots and racists which is ironic as wearing a shirt with another mans name on the back of it has some rather gay insinuations.
Couldn't care less about it TBH.
Have to echo most of what Saracen said - some PE teachers, and people in general having an attitude of 'how DARE you not like watching a bunch of guys kicking a ball', have fuelled a general disdain for the sport. It just properly bores me.
I used to watch only the football world cups, mainly because it was a chance to see some of the best players in the world like Messi.
I think as is evident, it's probably a question aimed at the wrong group of people, or a desperate attempt by manufacturers to keep us unnecessarily updating our products(me cynical!). Now days it all seems so pointless watching a group of spoilt brat(generalisation alert) millionaires prancing around on a field. I was to busy playing chess at school, or using cross country running to bolt around to my friend's house and listen to Hawkwind. Oh and I don't even have a tv to pointlessly upgrade every six months. But enjoy it if it's your thang.
So, I think the football question is answered.
Now, anyone bought a TV to watch the Eurovision Song Contest? ;)
If I see a 65" OLED UHD for under £1200 with 5 year warranty then sure otherwise I'll continue waiting, looking forward to replacing my old 60" 1080p.
I know its billed as sport, and no doubt there is some physical training involved, but basically football (and tbh most professional sports) are part of the entertainment industry - and I dont find football entertaining.
And going back to the original question - it doesnt stop at a TV - you probably need a sky sports subscription as well, as the demands of FIFA and the FA for television rights have forced many broadcasters out of the market, and fuelled the obscene amounts that some platers are paid.
Ironic that there are howls of outrage at the salaries of 'fat cats of industry' and yet silence at the outrageous salaries of professional footballers.
HEXUS you obviously failed in breaking through 'Wrinkly's' real world filter while he continues to while his time away browsing randomly on the 'web'. !!!
Maybe you need to make the HEXUS Logo BIGGER and with flashing lights and Thumping Music, just for the people who are physically here ONLY while their brain 'flatlines' somewhere/when else.
:) :)
Nice one.
But for many acts, it unfortunately comes with a screen for pictures, too.
Best TV for Eurovision, both speakerless and screenless, is known as a wall.
It's probably the only thing that would get me to watch football is if the only alternative was Eurovision .... and I was chained to a bolted down chair, facing the screen, with my eyelids stapled open.
watch it at the cinema xD
Yes, I will. But I'll be getting one because I don't have a TV at the moment and have been planning to get one, the world cup just gives me even more reason to do so. I've been wanting a TV that I can game on and watch content in 4K and now that 4K TVs with HDR are affordable, might as well pull the trigger. Most likely I'll be getting an LG 43UJ630V http://www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-43UJ630V
4K, HDR, Smart, 60Hz, low latency.
Touché! I forgot about the many various classless acts that are both visually and acoustically offensive to the senses. Honestly it's been so long since I've seen it, the only time I catch wind of its content is when it seeps out into the press. Needless to say, I'm not convinced it has improved in any way at all.
Not only is it next year, but it's being played in England! And England are in with a genuine chance, I reckon
Very few people who read/comment on Hexus, apparently ;) I rather suspect that, as with most of these things, it's people who already want a new TV using whatever the current appropriate event is to justify their purchase...
Oh hells no! I almost needed a new phone last night though - mine very nearly went out of the window from the frustration of trying to find a non-Eurovision tweet in my stream....
As to the QOTW, I reckon spending ~ £1 per minute of event that you'll watch on a new TV is probably a justified expense, so I imagine I'll be spending almost exactly .... £0 on a new TV for the football world cup ;)
To be fair, if you want a TV then there seem to be bargains to be had atm. I might not like football, but if it saved me some money on a purchase buy buying in some season I don't really understand then I wouldn't complain. As long as I don't have to go around shouting the likes of "Goal!" a lot though, I have my limits ;) :D
I've just recently upgraded from an old 1440x900 monitor. I don't think I will be buying a new TV anytime soon or for the World cup.
Buuut I will be streaming it on my new monitor :D. I don't the 10 second or so delay behind satellite TV to be a pain, although I have seen many others complain about that.
I'd rather gouge my eyes out with sugar spoons and desert forks than even watch a minute of it. If it was on every channel every hour of everyday I would be giving the TV away. No I'd PAY for someone to take it away. I wonder if Captain Pugwash is on reruns.
So I guess thats a 'no' then? :p
On reflection, the wording of the question might have been improved on the lines of:
"Will you be buying an Iphone X or other Apple product for the ultimate experience watching the football world cup this year?"
Now that would have generated some contributions :)
Don't follow football, so the short answer for me is no.
I've spent so much money on tech over the years, and have now changed my ways. When the TV breaks it will get replaced, I will research it, and will choose a model wisely (I hope!)
There's only one world cup I watch and that involves an oval shaped ball! - And even then I wouldn't update my TV just to watch it!
Well, seeing as the World Cup is one of the reserved events of sport, and has to be on terrestrial, and neither BBC nor ITV transmit anything 1080p yet, let alone 4k, I don't think it would be worth it, "for the World Cup", but otherwise as people have said before, a good time to buy something if you were looking anyway. Only thing is, what seems to be discounted is the lower end stuff, which doesn't do HDR or WCG very well, which for me is the main point in upgrading.
Besides, I've kind of gone off watching England, but if I were going to watch them, I would use the money I haven't spent on a new telly on getting blind drunk in the pub, which is the only way I find the games entertaining these days.
Also, I got a new 4k telly about 18 months ago, and I haven't gone past the wife's NTU, which is the well known SI unit, the New Telly Unit, currently about 6 or 7 years.
Won't be watching the World Cup. Won't be buying a new TV to not watch the World Cup on. Simples.
No, bought one during Black Friday.
If the World Cup was being broadcast for free in 4K I would be interested in watching a little bit just to see the tech in actions - I did see a very impressive 4K football match demo in John Lewis once.
But I'm guessing that will have to wait for 2022. Or, more likely, 2026.
I think Saracen has subconsciously made me put my cynical hat on again.
You need to quote viewing distances, ask her if she wants to be sitting 6" from the telly to get the full effect. And then when she says 'why do we need a new telly then?", you're on your own. Unless you 'accidentally' break the old one...
And bezels. Back in the day, bezels were at least 50% of the screen size, so you could get a 48" and it would have the same overall size. Maybe.
Already bought a Bravia 49EX9005 a couple of months ago. In my case it was to watch F1 in 4K though (and other stuff in due course, as the range of content slowly improves).
And before all you sport haters start again, I couldn't give a rat's ass if you like F1 or not. I like it, so I choose to watch it :)
Was thinking about getting a 4k TV not because of the world cup but because my tv is getting on in years and it might be time to upgrade.
Who's a sports hater? I hate football, and have no interest in many other sports, but SOME I do watch. Used to include F1, but got bored years ago. I still watch a lot of bike racing, especially MotoGP, and World and British Superbikes .... but I wouldn't buy a new TV for that, either.
A better QOTW might have been about buying a new TV to watch the next premiere event of your favourite sport, but it's a bit of a gob-full.
As for F1, why I got bored with it is another thread (and been done before, IIRC) but I regard choice of sport to follow as being like favourite music, or foods you do/don't like - my reaspns are good enough for me, but nobody else will give a hoot if, or why, I don't like horseradish.
Hey, there's an original QOTW - do you like horseradish? I might have to patent that one. ;)
The bezels thing is certainly the case for our current living room TV. Samsung had a name for it, a crystal bezel or somesuch, it was so huge they tried to make a feature of it. So yes, our current 46" screen (which was greeted with something like "what the hell have you bought") has about a 50" diagonal in modern terms. I think for the viewing distance, a 55" would be fine.
However, in wife terms it doesn't matter how close or far she is sitting from the TV, she will be reading a book :D
That might make a better QOTW on here mind, "If there is going to be nothing but football on the TV, will you be buying a book" ;)
I think I had the same telly. The B7020, but 40", I actually measured it, and the diagonal was the same as the 49" we ended up getting, so you should easily get away with a 55". I would have pushed it, but the legs were too wide for our telly stand. And trying to get a new telly stand and a new telly past the wife? Not when you chuck in a new 4k BD player as well (discounted, almost more expensive not to buy it...)
And it's a shame the Beeb won't be broadcasting in 4K (as per news on 15th May). So folks may as well stick to their old shoddy tellies.
However, World Cup or not I would say upgrade your telly regardless. Watching your 4K Bluray and Netflix 4K/HDR shows really is a huge improvement. You only have to watch Blue Planet II in 4K to see why upgrading to see why upgrading is a good thing.
I've already got an LG 43UH661V 43 inch Ultra HD telly. It's lovely.
Tech support time:
On occasions watching things via Xbox One X. I get the image flickering on and off. Sometimes I get "Invalid Format". Turning the telly off/on will resolve it. But I don't know if it's the telly, the cable or the Xbox.
Anyone else get this?
I'll be watching the WC but a new TV? No. Don't be silly.
Buying a new one just for the World Cup - no way.
In any case, I got a new one last year that does UHD and HDR, so no worries !
We bought a TV. A big shiny 65" Samsung QLED.
It's all the bells and whistles with 4K UHD and HDR1000, lovely for watching the footy on BBC iPlayer in UHD.
Got ourselves a Samsung soundbar to go with it, the quality is glorious.
https://i.imgur.com/bRBngYU.jpg?1
I think we can consider that job jobbed.
Bought a Samsung QLED TV last year when the old TV started to have issues. Was going to buy one of those Cambridge Audio soundbars, but the built-in speakers sounded good enough anyway(which was a shock). Also found the TV quite good at upscaling 1080p content too.
Yeah, we've found that as well. Really good at sorting out the pixels and the colours. I wish the same could be said for our Virgin TiVo v6 box, that thing is rubbish at upscaling, to the point where we've had to turn off the 2160p output and go back to 1080p only. Think I may have Virgin come out and look at it next week if it doesn't sort itself out.
Yeah,I noticed that a number of the TV sticks also seemed to do a worse job. Generally quite pleased with the image quality overall.
Having said that it seems Samsung is not sending an HLG update for the model of TV we have, despite it being HDR1000:
https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/...Vs/td-p/339023
A bit annoyed about that, although might apparently a Roku Streaming Stick might help.
My LED's color is fading away, cricjaffa posted lpl schedule now I am planning to buy a new led for lpl season.
