As nobodyspecial says, I'm not going to have anything that listens to everything I say. I have no social media platforms either. "Twitcrap" now that made me laugh. My privacy is mine, no one elses.

Lol ... why would anyone really want to be listening in on Mr/Mrs/Whoever average or do you really think Jeff Bezos gets his kicks from folk discussing family, friends, sex life, porn habits, etc.
The box looks a natural upgrade from the old Fire tv box if you do not want that silly dangly current Fire tv, though why the ethernet or power supply is not built into the box is rather strange seeing as they do not look overly large and i bet there is a bit of airspace in the Cube.
Actually .. Cube ... Borg .... assimilation (pour fuel on the paranoia).

I think they're concerned Jeff gets his kicks selling this data who people who may use it for any purpose they want, protect it as poorly as they wish, and continue to make copies that could end up who knows where. Not that Jeff himself is personally absorbed in it. I'm sure he has far better ways to waste time, like figuring out new ways to ruin the lives of warehouse stock pickers.

All this reminds me of the overblown hate for Google Glass because people thought they were filming all the time, it struck me as massive arrogance the assumption that anyone would want to film the haters with their Google Glass and now it seems similarly arrogant to think that Google/Amazon or any company would want to listen to your every word... you are really not that important. Data collection distils the key words and voice commands as part of massive data sets of millions of people so they can pull trends, target ads and try to flog you more tat, not because anyone gives a hoot what you chat about of an evening. If you think it's a privacy violation for Amazon to know you are an adult but still like Lego and listening to Ariana Grande then you've got major issues, you should probably stop using any debit or loyalty cards and go cash only, camp in a remote field, never go near major population centres and definitely get off the internet.

The raw audio is not retained for long beyond the word analysis, can you imagine the amount of storage it would require to retain the 24/7 audio recorded by every Echo device? Jeff Bezos is not sitting in his evil lair listening in to your latest debate about whether it's too likely to rain to hang out the washing, I can't think of anything much more boring than listening to me discussing trivialities with the Mrs or talking gibberish with my daughters. It's not like anyone sits in their living room calling out their credit card numbers or passwords for internet banking...

Why do I care if they sell my shopping habits as part of a massive data set, there's nothing to be ashamed of and if I must see ads then relevant ones are preferable...

Exactly ... or how to deprive british workers delivery driving jobs by employing European immigrants who can speak English, have no experience of driving in the UK and are usually in a van thats probably best put in the local scrapyard.
Then there is now the probability that Amazon Prime will increase to pay for a bunch of overpaid prima donnas running around kicking a ball of air.
These are the things (along with the lack of decent content and the cost of the content) that is making me think of abandoning Prime, not that old Jeff might be listening to me telling the lights to turn off.
I currently use Fire TV to mainly watch Netflix and some of the Alexa usage is good if not essential (i can work a light switch) and the Fire tv box and remote does work better than say a Now tv box and remote.
If it retails here (for example) at £90 i would be okay with paying another £10 - £20 for it if it meant that British people had those driving and warehouse jobs and were paid at least the national living wage and the icing on the cake would be not to give millions to footballers and perhaps even build the Cube here.

Re: Amazon Fire TV Cube launched

People who worry about data sharing and privacy don't want to shop at tescos or sainsbury's (other supermarkets do the same but I know for certain these 2 do) as they share loads of your data, especially if you have a clubcard or nectar card. The petrol stations also use anpr tech to inform the dvla and other agencies that you have visited them so they can check that your insurance and/or tax is up to date. Data sharing is rife because it's easy money. Oh and facebook selling data to ZTE who are considered a security risk in the US is so so funny.
In fact you don't want to go out, don't shop online and in fact become a hermit...

I'm joking, of course, but statistics reckon you will be seen at least 25 times a day by cctv systems whilst you just do your daily routine. Facial recognition is now employed by a large majority of these so they even know where you go!
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!

Re: Amazon Fire TV Cube launched

One thing that has annoyed me since I was given an Echo dot was that it couldn't control my Fire TV - apparently it can in the US, but not here. Ended up abandoning the FTV and getting a Shield TV, which is far better and has an official Prime Video app anyway.
