The performance looks impressive but I still think AMD got the marketing wrong if they really wanted to take on the serious workstation market, "Threadripper" is just like all the childish faux-gamer language used by the motherboard and graphics card manufacturers for their gaming oriented lines.

Epyc-W would have been better in my opinion, an association with server parts is better for the workstation market that sounding like a gaming product. I hope it isn't too much of a missed opportunity in the end.

The naming and product packaging are a bit turn off. But I can look past that.

The question for me is, what performance is available at a sensible price (so, the bottom end), and how easy is it to access? I'd pay more for a processor that didn't have to switch into a dedicated game mode to work properly - but then, only so much more (looking at you Intel, with your silly prices).

It's not really for the serious workstation market, in the same way the Titan series isn't and even though i can't think of it of the top of my head something Intel sells, if you want serious workstation hardware there's probably better stuff to spend your money on, like the Titan's it's aimed at the prestige market, it may not be a big market but there's defiantly a market there for people who have the money.

Look at Sophos' marketing over the past 4 years, boring marketing to "exciting" and "eye catching". We've sold their anti exploit product just on their flagship InterceptX video (which may or may not contain a quote i gave )

don't get me wrong 32core/64 thread @ 3.3 + GHz is astonishing, but the 250W tdp is equally impressive. Although to be fair the FX-9370 had a 220W tdp for 8 cores

Beware that the I9 Skylake-x chips have a higher than specified TDP in the real world. I've seen people getting a 205w draw on a 165 watt chip!!!!

I'm used to using Xeon workstations that ISTR are 180W for 6 core/12 thread and a heatsink that weighs more than most consumer PCs. They still idle at a low power, so no-one really cares what they burn when getting the job done.

Difficult to draw direct comparisons as they both calculate their TDP differently so you'd need well thought out and controlled testing of each CPU, having said that some google results show some i9's pulling anything from 150-240W at load (link 1, 2) so a 250W TDP for 32c 64t CPU seems to be quiet a way better, obviously we won't know for sure until reviews are published.

Speaking of which, do we know when the review embargo lifts?
