MSI and Aorus launch X399 Threadripper 2000 motherboards

Both feature expanded VRM and cooling capability for AMD's up to 250W TR4 processors.

Dual Gigabit and a 10GbE?!? Someone has definitely been listening to feature requests!

If I had a reason to buy a Threadripper, I would look at these boards at the top of my list. I don't normally like MSI, too much flash/bs most of the time. Form over function but these seem to have a healthy mix of both.

Sorry but all those LEDs and "armour" gave me acid flash backs to 'Nam.

That ain't the smell of napalm, that's the smell of "thermal armour" cooking your chips (I take it they have negated the whole "we're gonna just insulate everything" issue and started using heatsinks now?)

And when you're advertising "solid pins", I'm assuming that this is some actual technical thing rather than merely advertising the fact that your fan headers are made of solid materials and are not gaseous?

[insert appropriate fart joke referring to gaseous air movement here]

Yes, I wondered about that. Some power pins are split down the centre so they are slightly oversize. When they are inserted into the socket they comrpess slightly ensuring a really good contact along the length of pin/socket. A solid pin, unless precisely matched to the socket (turned pin connectors) don't get that ad so the contact pressure may be reduced leading to poorer performance.

So without knowing the precise technical details, this sounds like a bit of meaningless marketing flumf.

Going on what they claim on the marking for another board they say it makes a good connection and significantly lowers the wires capacity.

Depends what it plugs into though - plugs and sockets are a system!

So to ensure a good connection, either the material of the pin will have to be compressed by the socket or the socket will havbe to be distended by the pin. Otherwise contact will be reduced. The odds of this making ANY difference that is either a)measureable within the margin for error of the on board equipment or b) going to make any more difference than a sparrow farting in Spain is slim. This is not a high voltage system therefore the risk of arcing is extremely low.

And I know arcing. I once set up a HID lighting system on my bike. The lights stopped working and I saw the cables (running just under the fuel tank) were arcing between them through the insulation. Let this be a lesson to always extend the wires on the LOW voltage side, not the high voltage side. Oh and not to use second hand wire, not fit for the purpose (well, it was designed to stop water ingress...) from a second hand boat lying nearby. I have idiot in my name for a reason. Luckily I didn't explode and the burn marks rubbed off. Also, I found that a high end bog standard bulb was not illegal, brighter and cheaper. As well as not potentially blowing my balls off.
