    Samsung CEO says it is “time to deliver” a foldable phone

    But it sounds like Samsung is still looking for a good angle for marketing the Galaxy X.

    Didn't need to justify flip phones because there wasn't much to justify. Comparatively easy to make, cheap, not much in the way of R&D. People who spend millions, billions, on something purely theoretic tend to question their justification..

    Actually, think about it. Would be nice to have a 6 inch phone, 5 mm thick, fold into a 3 inch phone, small in your pocket, but big when you use it.

    Saw this and thought of a phone that doubles as a slap bracelet.

    why i would like one, also hopefully it will be the screen on the inside so you are protecting the screen from scratching while in your pockets, yes my phone is oold, its from 2006 so it has some scratches from being in my pocket and swarf from work.

    <sarcastic_pseudoabusive_banter>

    I like the idea of features to appeal to millennials. I assume this phone will block people who upset you automatically upon hearing you burst into tears and report them to the appropriate authorities for hurting your feelings. I assume the interface will also be tweaked to basically turn the entire screen into a "block" button that you can mash at wildly whilst "triggered".

    Guessing it'll also ramp up the "beautification" stuff on the camera to 11 as well. I seem to remember there was one phone which identified who you were on selfies and applied smoothing and contrast adjustments to you to make you look better whilst applying the opposite effects to your friends.

    </sarcastic_pseudoabusive_banter>

    <poor_anecdote>

    Dunno why this comes to mind but as I'm ripping out of millennials... I once saw a video on Youtube of some young kid (~18 years) manning a communist stand. He had a load of material and the giant flags and he was being asked the usual about "what makes your communism different to every other communist system that has failed?" and he was going on about how it has never been tried properly and how he's the real deal and it's all about distribution of wealth properly, etc etc. At the end of the 5 minute conversation the guy asking the questions politely says "that's really interesting, can I take a magazine?" and the reply comes.... "that'll be a quid". Oh how I wet myself.

    Oh, is it that time of year, already... when some tech company starts harping on about foldable, bendable LCD screens again?
    Cor, it'll be Christmas soon!!

    I miss my Samsung Z500V - One of the smallest ever, yet so packed with features. Alas, I only got mine once the trend for phones being bigger had started. Used it so much, I wore out the keypad and broke off every one of the rubber port covers. Still an awesome phone.

    Had to happen. Screens are getting bigger all the time. Makes sense to make a foldable screen that will fit in your pocket - but still give you great screen real-estate.
    Give it 2 years and Apple will have one too, pretending they invented it.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_estate

    TBH, having a 5.6" screen over a 5.5" screen* isn't exactly anything to wet your pants over, anyway. Not unless you're the sort of banana who queues up outside an Apple™ Store for six days, just so you can be the first to spend over a grand on something that should cost maybe a fifth of that, at most...

    That's only for Microsoft's ideas, isn't it?
    Either way, I'll be sticking with Android.

    *The only difference between my phone and the newer version, but at the time was touted as THE next best thing since sliced bread and IIRC even used the "world's first" tag as a selling point.

    Microsoft have done lots of things Apple have neither copied nor claimed credit for:

    BSOD is one notable one

    New paid for versions every 3 or 4 years is another one they have neither copied nor claimed credit for

    Apple don't pretend to "invent" things anymore, they just refine them and release a usable device that is consumer orientated with the kinks ironed out.

    This I really can't disagree with. I've had smartphones since before they were a thing and really it was never the limitations of the hardware, the software or the available software (I remember watching BBC iPlayer on a HTC TyTN II on the bus) but the implementation. The user interface for windows mobile was shocking and slow but once I paid for a decent overlay it worked smoothly and was touch friendly with a 3D interface and multiple homescreens. That, combined with the mini laptop kind of thing you could do made it an amazing device. Apple came along and removed the need to be a nerd to have a proper smartphone. They opened it up to the layperson and made stuff "just work" rather than having to delve into TCP/IP settings on your phone which was both fiddly and unwanted.

    Apple never invented anything, but they brought things to the masses with intense R&D and a lot of smugness.
