I always like new entries in Dell's UltraSharp line, but concerning this particular model I'm pretty sure it's cheaper and more flexible to get two U2717D (or U2715H) monitors.

Would this display with black bars top and bottom if watching a dvd or blu-ray? Assume it would have black bars either end?

    Most films are recorded in 21:9, so the 2560 x 1080 or 3440 x 1440 display formats.
With 32:9 you will get black bars at each end.

I've got a U3415W at work and was looking at the U3417W for the home office revamp, but this looks very good to replace (or accompany) my existing pair of 1440p Ultrasharps

With 32:9 you will get black bars at each end.
So would the actual screen image be the same size as on a standard 49" 16-9 tv?
I know there are no black bars either end but top and bottom on a standard 49" tv.
Using this monitor to watch a 16-9 film you would only have the image on half the screen (black bars 25% either end, image 50% in middle)?
