Re: Gigabyte may be readying a GeForce GTX 1060 with GDDR5X

Seems rather weird for an SKU as GDDR5X costs more than GDDR5 and its not really needed either for a GTX1060. I suspect it is more likely we see something like a 128 bit memory bus, hence the faster RAM makes more sense. If not,I wonder why they didn't use a slightly spec reduced GTX1070 instead??

GDDR5X has been out for some time now, perhaps 6GB of GDDR5X is significantly cheaper than 8GB of GDDR5 so it looks more like a 1060 than a 1070. Sounds like it could be an interesting product which if Nvidia embraced it could be a 1060ti.

Naturally I expect them to mess it up by making a 3GB version

Is it cheaper than 6GB of slightly faster GDDR5 than what they use now?? They could have always taken the GTX1070,used the same core arrangement but cut down the memory bus to 192 bit??

If they already bought a truck-load of GDDR5X to use with 1080 GPUs, then compared to selling it off in the gray market at a loss, yes
AIUI Nvidia will sell you a GPU kit including the ram as well as the chip.

Re: Gigabyte may be readying a GeForce GTX 1060 with GDDR5X

They could take a 1070 and alter the memory bus but really this sounds like they're using a surplus of GPUs so what they do will depend on what's laying around.

Which leads me to wonder whether these 1060s will be fully functional 1080s with a BIOS that could be hacked.

    Because that would be awesome.

so if they are using binned 1080/1070 chips are they bios locked or die locked in order to be used as 1060s

This'll be interesting to watch review wise. The 12nm Polaris 30 has put the cat amongst the pigeons in the mid range market.. A month before Black Friday/Holiday shopping kick off too.

AT has some more news about this:

    https://www.anandtech.com/show/13515...-1070-1060-6gb

Another note is the revision of GTX 1060 6GB models to include GDDR5X memory, though clocked the same as the original GDDR5. Providing the same amount of memory bandwidth, the logic points to a supply/inventory reason rather than a performance refresh.

And of course, everyone will be keeping mem clocks at stock... The regular GDDR5 on the 1060 clocks to the nines already, I wonder how much you could get out of these GDDR5X modules.
