    And quadruples floating-point performance, too.

lol... I said this would happen in the intel 48 core thread.

Does this mean I should wait for consumer chips (3700X)? I'm itching to build a PC but with the Intel shortages I might just have to wait that long anyway.

Zen2 has the potential to be something amazing. AMD has rebuilt the architecture on how compute and I/O are laid out and what I'm most looking forward to is if they've fixed the memory and I/O latency across CCXs issue by using a separate I/O die.

Additionally, if they fix the above, will the way they are addressed as NUMA node change as well. 7601 classes as 8 NUMA, will the change to architecture change this too?

I am really itching to see how Epyc performs and in turn will cast a light on Ryzen 3xxx performance. Man, that is impressive.

Interesting that they now have a central IO chip. I wonder if that design will filter down to Threadripper and Ryzen chips.

Sounds like they might be a while yet. It also sounds like they are keeping socket compatibility though, so you could build a 2700X box for now to scratch that itch and upgrade in a year.

If the sockets and motherboards stay fully compatible, you could even get a 1700 (£150 at Ebuyer atm) and go with that until the 3xxx chips are out. Or use a a Ryzen 3/5 as a cheaper placeholder CPU.

Second that to the above comments. That's the great thing with AMD, I can upgrade my CPU when I can afford it or the previous gen price is reduced.

I have recently built a Threadripper 1920X with the CPU bought for £337, but I can easily upgrade to the new gen Threadripper later, while enjoying the amazing cpu right now.

I'm in a similar boat; I built a Threadripper 1900X system last January and I'll be looking to upgrade the CPU to something in the 3rd gen. lineup. I hope that 64 core part makes its way to TR4 (with half the memory channels and IO, obviously). That would be sweet.

Though would 'only' 4 memory channels be too little for a 64 core TR?

Depends whether they put on an IO die with an HBM2 interface to act as the first 32GB of ram

I wonder how far they will go with the chiplets. If they do a Vega chiplet then I presume that can plug into one of the infinity fabric ports on the IO controller just like a CPU chiplet.

You can build a Zen+ system right now and just upgrade to Zen 2 (CPU only) when its released next year.
AMD said that Zen 2 will be compatible with existing motherboards up until 2019 or 2020... so, Zen 2 WILL be supported (provided the motherboard vendors release the BIOS updates for it - so make sure to pick an motherboard manufacturer that will do that).
