I'd say the biggest punch in the new Mac Mini comes from the price. But hey, it's Apple...

    +1
its easy to be well over the grand mark with a few spec changes.
Its a nice compact device but i just think how much PC one could get for the money.

Re: Apple launches a Mac Mini with a "huge punch"

$799 = £799 in no ones conversion table.
the Mini was a way to enter the Apple world, from £399, now they doubled it as a entry machine.

even the MacBook Air is now over £1k.

    it's crazy.

Re: Apple launches a Mac Mini with a "huge punch"

While I've never been a fan of apple pricing, especially of late, I think I can see what's going on at the moment.

There have been plenty of rumours of Apple wanting to ditch intel cpu's etc in their laptop/desktops so they can use their own arm based designs, if you look at the pricing of their line up now, it's pushing you towards getting an iPad at the 'consumer price range' which uses their own cpu.

Combine this with a push (likely at Apple's request, no matter what adobe say) for 'professional' grade hardware graphic software (a market which Apple is known for) and I'd say the 'idea' from Apple is to try and price people out of intel so they can do another change of processors in the 'near' future.

As to the hardware releases, the air is seriously overpriced for what it is, the mac mini is overpriced for what it is and really needed a dedicated gpu (ie the intel/amd combo chip) rather than just using the intel one and the iPad Pro, all I could see during the presentation was basically 'fluff' because it's basically the same thing as last time with a cpu spec bump, a 'marketing name' display and a new case....it also only comes with 4GB of ram in most cases (6GB on 1TB version) which is anything but professional imo.

Then we get all the usual 'American' tech blogs saying 'apple is god' as usual rather than being subjective about the things....now don't get me wrong Apple make some nice hardware, it's overpriced in most cases, but they're not the only ones who make nice hardware and deserve the same level of 'adoration' by tech blogs...

Re: Apple launches a Mac Mini with a "huge punch"

So the minimum cost of entry to OSX is £799, for iOS it's £319 and for an iPhone it's £449.

That's a hell of a barrier to entry for those not already invested.

Er no - UK price is £655 (plus 20% VAT) so $799 against £655. so actually only about £25 more at todays exchange rate.

Yes but it comes down to old argument that the US price doesn't include Sales Tax, payable in most US states and the UK price does (VAT).

Re: Apple launches a Mac Mini with a "huge punch"

Eitherway though, regarding the price, which is extortionate for a limited upgradable PC, even if it is an Apple "PC", it just makes Hackintosh look even more appealing.

My biggest disappointment though is that there were no announcements regarding iMacs and I hate to think whet the new price for them will be when they eventually get updated.

Yes, but the UK price includes 20% VAT. US prices are quoted exclusive of sales tax.

So as I said earlier - the equivalent UK price is £655 +20% VAT

As I say to all my friends who adore Apple products... If Apple stuff were really even half the God some people proclaim them as, why are so many users whining that something isn't 'Mac Compatible'?
If their stuff were any good, the people making those somethings would surely make compatible versions, no?

Meanwhile, I just despise the aesthetics of the things.

Still, 10Gb ethernet option. More boxes with that please, we have been stuck on 1Gb for what feels like forever.

I imagine that's either available separately at a hideous additional cost, or is not included because you don't get to decide how your machine gets used - You wait for them to tell you, or raise a fault ticket and get told you're not doing it right.
