AMD:we have architecture!!
INTEL: you thought AMD had architecture we have architecture too!!

What a surprise!
Not to be pessimistic but I'm expecting more guff about 10nm, firing shots at AMD and a roadmap full of holes.

To be honest I absolutely love it when a company as large as Intel is basically running scared of the little guy (AMD) purely because they've been complacent and sitting on their hands and milking their current cpu's instead of making real progress with them (they're still trying to do it now...)
Well, I'll remain pessimistic in regards to Intel. They're already late delivering on 10nm, by a considerable margin. They're haven't delivered anything really new in terms of cpu design for a long time and essentially all we've seen is incremental updates alongside requirements for new motherboards or sockets pretty much every other generation. Don't even get me started on platform segregation or "independent benchmarking" marketing...
Contrast that with the developments from AMD. Intel need to focus on the basics and start learning some lessons.
Time to find out what Jim Keller's been up to.
I wonder how many of Intels shareholders went "so what have you got, huh?" and that's when this was announces.
I bet Intel were expecting a slightly improved Zen+ with 64 cores for Epyc 2. Then AMD slapped a major architectural revamp, massively improved (theoretically) I/O, pcie 4.0, clocks and IPC.
All in all, AMD has had a brilliant announcement that really does speak well for AMD and the future in the server market.
This is something I've wondered about for a while. Are any of these announcements from Intel/AMD really a surprise to the other? With so many engineers working on this stuff for year+ lead times, samples being made and the slides presumably going through marketing/legal departments etc...I'm not suggesting anything too shady but with so much at stake surely the broad design is an open secret at best? Then again, Intel do seem to have spent much of the last year rushing responses out in a panic so maybe I'm wrong...
Hey everyone!! we're going to tell you all about how our future CPU's will be faster than anything AMD will have.
...of course we wont mention that it will all be about 30-50% more expensive.
