So, it's a dedicated swap drive. Nice.
Does that mean my old jumpers and shirts will come back in fashion as well?

Pretty much (on both counts :p)

That was my thought too...and then I was like I'm already doing close to this without any need for a specialised drive, I'm already using my old ssd as a page file/scratch disk.

The interesting benchmark wouldn't have been RAM vs this drive, but this drive vs one of their normal SSDs. Mind you, it could be for the intended use a normal SSD would die in no time and this could be a high endurance drive.

Actually it doesn't look much difference to the normal storage version other than software/firmware focusing on 'memory' versus 'storage'.
Re: Western Digital announces the Ultrastar DC ME200 Memory Drive
This did remind me of the RAM drives of old which had a few hundred MB of EDO RAM popped into a spare drive bay and acting as a fast HDD.
Re: Western Digital announces the Ultrastar DC ME200 Memory Drive
I notice the spec sheet on these says "Memory Storage Type: Volatile, non-persistent" vs their usual three months data retention at 40 C. They must be driving the flash very strangely, or they have a bunch of dodgy flash.
Guess you shouldn't use this on a machine that sleeps by storing the ram contents in swap :D
