More fragmentation... YAY!

Indeed. God I almost miss physical media.

I do miss it. I hate having multiple platforms controlling access to different games. It's pathetic. I have been known to not buy a game due to not wanting yet another stupid platform with all the associated updates, nagging about "points" and trying to connect me with "friends" I once played online with about 12 years ago for 30 minutes.

Physical media could still install its own launcher. Who can forget *shudder* Games For Windows Live being on the discs?
Re: Epic Games Store takes aim at Steam with an 88:12 revenue split
I get it from a business perspective, but I too am fed up of all these different digital stores that require to be running when playing a game. I already completely ignore ubisoft games because of uplay for example. I don't mind steam and I put up with origin because I am a battlefield player, but even that annoys me. If these clients only needed to be ran to activate games and download updates it wouldn't be so bad, but having to switch between them to play different games becomes tiring when you are doing it multiple times a day.

You mean like Mass Effect 3 is available on Steam? Or Fallout 76 (FWIW)... Or Destiny 2... Or all the myriad games I haven't thought of.
The same thing is happening with video streaming. Not because of choice or competition, but because everyone wants a cut. Customers be damned.
Re: Epic Games Store takes aim at Steam with an 88:12 revenue split
While I dislike the steam 'monopoly' the reason it sticks is down to the fact you don't need to buy from steam. The thriving third party key market is what works (For example Green Man Gaming or Humble bundle) so I don't see myself moving (I've stuck to Steam and GOG for a while now). Hopefully this will cause some of fortnight 'gamers' to leave steam however...
Re: Epic Games Store takes aim at Steam with an 88:12 revenue split
This is mostly because most of the companies wants bigger cut (which I understand), but that means I need several game launchers and several streaming applications (and as many accounts) on my PC for what is just playing games or watch videos.
For me this is not elegant solution, but I do not think we are going to see any miracle happening here unfortunately.
This is the thing that we can not even vote with our wallets as that simply cuts us from many good stuff. And of course these companies are not ready and/or willing to talk about and just make join solution that would be beneficial for all.

Platforms will fail - games collections will be lost. The number one most important feature of any new platform should be the ability to download DRM free installation files. You could have hundreds of platforms like GOG and simply own the games you buy. I would use more platforms if game DRM was something that expired in a predictable fashion.

+1 There really should be regulations on creating AND selling digital content. I know it sounds a little crazy but these companies finally came out the dark ages and embraced digital delivery and actually made an impact in piracy etc. They are now just screwing this up by segregating content across platforms once again making people look for "alternative" means to get stuff. Not saying its right but the key to killing piracy is simple delivery and this does not help!
Same applies to video services....

Why does nobody mention Twitch's game platform in the articles? I don't use it so I have no idea. What's the revenue split like over there?

It does lead to more choice, but it actually leads to much less competition. If all (or the majority of) games were available on all of the platforms, then sure there is more competition and it could be good for us.
As it stands this does not benefit anyone other than the publisher. Consumers end up with a myriad of apps on their PCs - all with different friends lists, authentication methods and requiremnets, game choices etc etc. Its a daft situation to be in and not one I want to encourage in anyway.
Still, Epic have not made any decent games in 10 years (if I am being generous, I could say 7 years and let them have Gears 3, but I wasn't a fan) so whilst I am a big fan of their engine, that won't need me to install this client so I likely never will :)
It can stay in the naughty corner along with Bethesda's, Rockstars, Twitch's and UPlay
Re: Epic Games Store takes aim at Steam with an 88:12 revenue split
Competition of providers (launchers) is not really beneficial to the end user really. Sure, because steam drops a price then the competition matches but all it does it create an unnecessary separation of gaming. As said by some previously, running another launcher system and digital store only benefits the publishers and not the end user much, more indirectly if theh get price competitive.
Steam is way too large a beast to be touch by a too big for their boots pile of trash, because that's what it will be. And the end user will be punished if the launcher store is discontinued in the years to come, what happens to your purchased goods? Officially you don't own them, you only lease them but that is still going to stick in the craw of the end user!
Steam won't adjust their pricing much more than they have, they know they have the biggest library and the biggest user base. Epic might get traction with devs by doing attractive pricing but a dev then has to look at the reach that the platform has and justify the validity of risking its use. Whereas taking a hit on revenue by using such a well integrated and long term running solution like steam, you have quantifiable metrics you estimate revenue on.
No launcher will even come close to steam unless they operate it for the next decade. Ea and ubisoft launchers only operate because ea knows the reach of their games are high enough that not using steam is not a problem. Plus they both have such diverse and mature game ranges meaning having their own launcher will offset lost revenue from reach of steam by retaining the revenue lost by selling through steam.
Frankly, it's nice, it could make steam be a bit cheaper and dev friendly but it will never ever be a steam killer. And to even mention it in any news article is just bad journalism.
