Sod 2.5 GBit and go 4 times faster! Use a £120 10 GBit 4 port switch? MikroTik CRS305 1G 4S+IN Switch
It's SFP+ so you could save money on the 10 GbE over twisted pair and just use Twinax cables (expensive and short) or use Fibre SFP+ modules for not too much (4 pack for £65 ish brand new!)
You'll probably need to use Ebay for the NIC though. New SFP+ NICs are still expensive.

I am running that kit on our work Supermicro fat twin quad node to link all 4 nodes together at 10GbE for vMotion and vSAN, it works great!
Now the only annoying thing is if only they could make a 40GbE version as the nodes are ConnectX-3 Mellanox 40GbE VPI QSFP+ modules.

Yep, that's why I keep eyeing up faster network solutions. This PC has to work, not just play games.
So that Killer thing is just integrated on a few Dell machines? Oh well, anything that pushes up the number of faster ports out there os a good thing. The 2.5Gb ports are supposed to be cheap, I was hoping they would be standard by now.

Yes, I’ve used some of their sfp+ modules with Mictotik kit.

This. So much this. It really gets on my goat when people moan about NICs >1gbps in high end kit just because their broadband is only 30-360mbps, as if broadband is the only application that uses ethernet ports. GbE should be being phased out of consumer gear by now, much less being the overwhelmingly dominant interface. Nonsense like this is only making it more difficult for 10GbE being mainstreamed.

Agreed, and whilst I can see that 2.5GbE is nice and cheap and is kind on the cabling part of me thinks that less than a magnitude increase isn't worth it and 10GbE leads nicely to a 40GbE setup in the future.
At work we are currently looking at 25GbE interface electronics, man those chips are expensive.
