I know it's only a ballpark figure but going from roughly 9W per core to 18W is a massive jump for a 600Mhz increase, they must really be running it on the ragged edge.

If this was AMD releasing a CPU with a 255W TDP everyone would be panning it, so I expect to see the same for this chip people.

Wonder how is the lifetime of a cpu like this...
The improvements in performance are really meh...

Funny how the tests that are released are ones that seem to favour intel.... the adobe tests do seem to be better suited to intel cpu's more than they are threadripper, but then the consensus with most adobe users is that it's not really that well coded for high core counts and it's still far better to go for a higher clock speed over more cores, an area where intel still has a lead over amd sadly.

Didn't Adobe change their applications relatively recently to the detriment of AMD and benefit to Intel?

Wouldn't be surprised, IIRC they 'took out' multi threading on after effects to rework it at one point and I'm not sure it's been put back in yet lol.

All I know is that I REALLY wish there was a viable alternative to adobe software so it pushed adobe to 'be better' as without competition adobe is rather lacking.

So it's just a speed-binned 9940X ?

What CPU being released right now by Intel isn't just a speed binned XYZ?

The lifetime of this CPU will be relatively short due to the high difference between idle and load temps. But it will probably still take years to fail.

Still gets beaten by a 9900K on the CC benchmarks LOL!!

Unless you have a particular need or have money to burn, to me, the best value for money performance CPU out of these is the i9 9900K.

i9 9900K - $850
i9 9940X - $2100
i9 9980XE - $3000

I understand other people have other needs and wants for the top-of-the-range products.
The one I am building at the moment will run a water-cooled i7 8700K and GTX 1080, 32GB RAM and a 1TB NVME which is using some used and some new parts which is worth between $2500 and $3000 (some parts are hand-me-downs from friends so costs are kept down lower than this).
