This could be a good thing, as long as it's not an exclusive

Lets hope Take 2 don't decide to take the bribe and screw over PC gamers!

They have had such a long standing relationship with Steam it would be quite naff to go exclusive. But because of the 7% cut which will probably be made even lower with a large lump cash sum to be exclusive, it is likely Tim Sweeney will gargle some orbs to stick it to steam and roll with the negative publicity.

*looks at Borderlands and Borderlands 2 in Steam library*.

Well, if they do decide to go exclusive with Epic Games Store, then they'll gain the extra cut they get doing it that way, however it'll be an extra cut of zero if it's Epic exclusive. I refuse to touch that store, my games currently reside across 4 platforms (Steam, Uplay, Origin and Blizzard). I'm not open to adding more to that list.

Steam, uPlay, Origin, Rockstar Social Club, Microsoft Store, and while I don't use it atm, ya, Blizzard too. It's nuts how many potential launchers there are. I'd actually get EGS too though, if I wanted a game from there. I don't really see an issue with running them (Steam is the only one that is on on boot, rest are turned on as needed), I genuinely don't get why people get so angry over launchers.

For me, it's not about launcher, i couldn't give a toss about having another. For me it is principle, i will not endorse a company and agressive strong arm tactics to force artificial growth through nefarious tactics.

I also take issue with their security, regional pricing and feature set. These companys that are putting enormous exclusivity kickbacks ahead of existing relationships with customers and distributors just irks me. Epic can get stuffed until they're not a bunch of playground bullies and frankly Tim Sweeney can suck a massive tailpipe for his hypocrisy and actions.

The launcher is annoying, but its not the biggest problem or even something worth getting too angry about these days...its the anti competitive, anti consumer business practices of epic that are winding most people up. Buying up exclusives in a market which has traditionally been relatively open is a very shady business practice which helps epic but actively hurts consumers, reducing choice and competition. It's one thing to do this with self developed games (fortnite/unreal in epics case, Half life et al for Valve, Battlefield/SWBF etc for EA) but to buy up 3rd party exclusives? It's a nasty trick that we've only really ever seen on consoles.

There genuinely wouldn't be the same level of backlash if Epic just operated as another platform/storefront where you could buy their games (as Uplay has traditionally done for example). We'll find out tomorrow the fate of Borderlands and if it's a title I will end up buying or not! If it ends up being an exclusive then thats it for Take 2..not going to get my money ;/

This is one of the concerning parts (aside from additional software running that creates yet another layer of potential security issues). This is console maker behaviour from a software developer directly targeting one specific platform (from my own perspective as a consumer). Otherwise Epic would compete against Steam for market share based on not only offering developers a larger cut of profits, but also pricing for consumers.

I can buy a key for lots of games on third party sites and activate through Steam where a bulk of my PC gaming library is, with none of the exclusivity issues compounding that. Steam is pretty open to working on this level (Humble bundle is an example that works well in this regard), yet Epic seem to want to bring everything in-house exclusively and by paying off developers to do so, to the detriment of the consumer.

Re: Borderlands 3 leak: Fri 13th Sept release via Epic Games Store

    UPDATE: The leaks were correct.

Borderlands 3 comes out on 13th September 2019 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Furthermore, the PC version does indeed launch on the Epic Games store exclusively for six months (until April 2020) after which it will appear on other digital stores.

In a press release, Gearbox wrote "The PC gaming community has been an important part of the success of the Borderlands series, and we are excited to be partnering with Epic who recognise its worldwide popularity and share in our commitment to bring Borderlands 3 to this rapidly expanding audience".

A gameplay trailer reveal is scheduled for 1st May.

It's a discrace Yet another publisher succumbs to greed and decides to screw over the gaming community.

To say I am angry is an understatement. They won't be getting my money, I feel bad for Gearbox..they really need a new, less greedy publisher. We now just need gamers to unite on this and boycott this anti competitive practice - there are luckily plenty of other great games to play this year, save your money and don't support this kind of greedy practice!

Epic made such great games in the past, it's so sad to see them try and destroy the PC gaming market like this..there was no need for it!

To play devil's advocate, why would anyone use Epic's store if they didn't go for exclusives? At least are only timed exclusives. The convenience of steam makes it otherwise hard to overcome and you could argue they're the greedy ones for taking such a high cut, albeit others are also guilty of this. Personally I'm not sure it's that big of a deal. It's just a different store. I find timed console exclusives more annoying.

Re: Borderlands 3 leak: Fri 13th Sept release via Epic Games Store

Epic could offer some form of competition if they wanted to - an easy one would be price. Given their 12% cut rather than 30%, it would be pretty straightforward for the publishers to sell a game 10% cheaper on epic compared to steam ..keeping the benefit of reduced cost, higher profits but also sell the game through multiple storefronts.

Win win for the publisher, consumer and valve/epic. Note that the developers don't tend to benefit from either arrangement...it's the publisher who gets the Extra cash here (a big reason all the devs involved are says "don't blame us!")

They could also just put some effort into their client, fix their security flaws and offer some basic features to end users .that would help too.

Epic buying exclusives is bad for everyone - it's pretty black and white really.

Re: Borderlands 3 leak: Fri 13th Sept release via Epic Games Store

While I am still not a fan of having exclusives in this way on PC, as it's more like console exclusivity behaviour, it is at least a point in their favour that they are specifically only doing it as a timed one rather than permanent, and that it will be on Steam too when that ends.

As long as they don't change their minds and keep it exclusive at the end of that time anyway.
