SSD price-per-GB expected to fall under 10 cents

Trendforce expects this to occur (for >512GB SSDs) before year's end.

Is this all SSD-type things, like M.2, PCIe cards and so on, or just ye olde 2.5" SATA SSDs?

All NAND packing storage devices, according to Trendforce.

The case on a 2.5" SSD is pretty much just there to pad the size up to where mounting screws etc can be used, it is kind of wasted material that also adds to packaging bulk and cost as the circuit board inside is pretty small. I'm sure the more compact M.2 is where the volume will go so will end up being cheapest, initially the SATA M.2 drives but NVMe isn't so new anymore and should again become the mainstream and therefore cheapest solution.

you can get these which are barely an inch long. can get 240gb versions too.

So that shows just how much wasted space is in the 2.5 chassis if you use them. (they acutally will ship you the ssd, a plastic holder and case and you assemble it at your office, slap a label on it and sell it as yours)

Found it. This is how they do their rebranding.

I was curious and slightly sceptical till i found out that Longsys bought up Lexar from Micron.

    What's newer than NVMe?

Last I looked, you had SATA and NVMe SSDs in 2.5", M.2 and PCIe form factors... and the 2.5"s were getting RGB stuff on 'em!

Oh it's still the newest, but it is well out of the new technology bracket and into the mainstream. It is adopted enough that Sata Express seems to have died before it really started (which seems like a good thing).

Having said that, we only have 2.5in Sata drives in this house atm as they are all upgrade purchases, but if I were building from scratch I suspect the price difference for NVMe would now be low enough for me to use it. Last drive I purchased it was a factor of two in price, so I went SATA.

Re: SSD price-per-GB expected to fall under 10 cents

    Oh good. And bad.

Good because I need a couple of decent-sized (500GB-1TB) drives.

Bad, because .... I don't want to wait that long.

    Arghhhh.

Yeah, this was absolutely guaranteed to happen.

How do I know? Because I just coughed up for three NVMe drives. 1TB to add to my main PC and a couple of 500GB sticks for SSD caching on the NAS.

Re: SSD price-per-GB expected to fall under 10 cents

Looking at this news, both here and on Tom's, then seeing the prices on Usanian sites, I then checked the prices on a well-know UK site. What's the exchange rate?
Although it's no longer made, the Samsung 961 is a good 'un as it's MLC - I don't need one but would like to see if it makes any difference over a SATA 850 Pro.

    Arghhhh.

1TB drives are already 11p/GB, how low do you need?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-MX5...dp/B077SF8KMG/
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07J2Q4SWZ

and interestingly the NVMe version is a few pence cheaper than the 2.5in drive, so crossover has happened and SATA is old hat.

It usually at this point one of the major manufacturers has a mysterious fire or flood that massively drops production and as a totally unintended consequence increases the prices for a year or so.

To be fair, it is usually because one of the suppliers is driven out of business. Just make use of the prices while they are in the low part of the cycle.
