AMD Ryzen 9 3950X unveiled - 16 cores and 32 threads for gamers

Now this has me wanting this rather than the 3900X, but I'm undecided as to whether I'm willing to pay the the premium to do so (and wait the couple of months extra).


...Oh, who am I kidding? I'd been hoping to go for a 16-core in the Zen2 generation, so I'll most likely go for it anyway.

To be fair I appear to have a little less (lot less) budget for my next build so I might get a B350 chipset board and a Ryzen 5 plus nice nvme ssd for my next build in this work pc. As long as I get 6c12t I'll be happy

The B450 chipset can be had quite cheaply. Can't even remember why I went for the X470 in the end

X470 not that much more when I checked (£25) yesterday than a decent B450. 6c12t minimum ideally 8c16t for me. Got gfx card, so it's nice ram, nvme boot drive and cpu and mobo needed

How do you define "decent" there? You can go as low as £60 for a B450 board and still get reputable manufacturer and all the requisite ports, while I haven't seen many X470 boards under £100...

So while we wait for PCIe5 and the like this allows a good jump for people already on this ecosystem.

However are those 24 lanes pcie3 or pcie4?

Are they shared with any of the sata/usb bus etc or purely available for graphics and nvme?

3900x sounds like better bang for buck with faster base too.

I'd heard they were releasing a new mobo variant for these to offer better thermal headroom etc - has that been scrapped now?

Yes - and they need fans on them because of the huge bandwidth afforded by pcie4
Massive bandwidth with nvme ssd's with 5 gb transfer speeds shortly available is the biggest thing - but for many that will be overkill. Also pcie4 graphics cards available shortly as well...

The quality of the VRMs in some B450 boards was a bit sub-par. Even 'top tier' manufacturers like Asus & Gigabyte were guilty of putting out quite poor motherboards in that respect...

Since when does $750 exchange to £800? Although it might end up being that price due to import duty and ripoff britain, the exhange rate is nowhere near that (£589 as im looking at it today)

By the time you add 20% VAT it's not far off a direct 1/1 conversion, it would probably be more accurate to knock £50 off the dollar price though rather than add £50.

when you learn that US prices do NOT include sales tax while the UK prices DO include VAT... and at the time I did that post that was the exchange rate according to google... so if it's off blame them

So what games can utilize 16c/32t? Most games require no more than 6-8 fast cores. 16c/32t is overkill for gaming especially if comes at the expense of clock speed. The title should read for gamers/streamers. At least there'd be some use for that extra core count.

One of the problems with Threadripper was that the gaming performance suffered. This has the potential to be good for gaming, and some of us have work rigs that occasionally game.

If the tech isn't there why develop for it and if no one is developing for it why make the tech?

That's a catch 22 that AMD have decided to ignore. They have an extremely scalable multi core that spanks the pants off, realistically, any previous method of multi core design and they are going to force it down the markets throat because that is AMDs unique selling point right now. And if you checked, the 3950X is not sacrificing frequency and is instead increasing it over the lower offerings because they are using higher quality silicon.

AMD are building a marketing story that gamers can do more with their systems without sacrificing anything.
