It could deliver up to 256GB/s via x16 configuration. Targeted for release in 2021.

Re: PCI-SIG outlines PCI Express 6.0 Spec with 64GT/s raw bit rate
Is speed the only thing left to push, is there anything more to it?
Just in time for Zen 3 and Intel 7nm!
Re: PCI-SIG outlines PCI Express 6.0 Spec with 64GT/s raw bit rate
Well, that added speed helps moves around way more data then we can do now, so the speed is essential.
For vast of gamers that want high end graphicsNo speed, no fun. Literally.

Can't you do broad as well as fast? HBM memory for example?

Looking forward to PCIe7 release.

Well gamers aren't exactly saturating PCIe3. Of course improvements aren't exactly a bad thing and it doesn't mean there won't be other use cases. 2 things that I wonder about is how gen 5 and 6 will impact both cost and heat if gen 4 is anything to go by.

Hoping this trickles down to USB4/5/TB3/4/5/??? standards to boost external GPU speeds.

HBM isn't quite broad as it isn't one memory channel, it is lots of narrow memory channels (IIRC, each is 32 bit). That helps GPUs though as they have lots of cores to feed that all want a bit of data.
The problem with going wider is that it is hard to get all the traces the same length such that all the bits arrive at the same time, so you end up having to slow down the clocks to allow enough timing margin. It also pushes up PCB complexity and cost.

Cost and heat as in the AMD X570 chipset? Already think of m.2 which suffers from heat as well. Higher bandwidth and more speed always has a trade-off. As more people adopt the issues will be sorted, think Intel as they currently seem disinterested in innovation as they are struggling with processes and output
Re: PCI-SIG outlines PCI Express 6.0 Spec with 64GT/s raw bit rate
One relatively new phenomenon, industry-wide, is the performance of the fastest DRAM compared to "4x4" add-in cards like the ASRock Ultra Quad x16 M.2 card. At PCIe 4.0, the bottleneck will likely shift back to the M.2 controllers and Nand flash limitations. It will be worth watching what Samsung offers at PCIe 4.0, which is the current standard. Water-cooled NVMe, anybody? It shouldn't be too difficult to add M.2 heatsinks to a water-cooling loop.

There's a reason that GDDR5 is 8 times faster per pin (8 GT/sec) than HBM (1GT/sec) and GDDR6 is also 8 times faster (16GT/sec)per pin than HBM2 (2GT/Sec)
