SIM only is probably going to see a bit of a boom as we're in the transition between 4G and 5G phones. People running out of contract are probably going to switch to SIM only whilst 5G phones mature but, at the same time, they want to encourage people to use more data as then they'll be able to put them onto the faster or higher limit 5G plans. I've just moved onto Vodafone's top SIM only data plan and my analysis after the fact showed this was the marketing which played into my motivation / situation. I turn my phone into a hotspot and expect full HD streaming for potentially two users to work through it so I'd say I'm an edge case.... Even so, it's cheaper than what I was paying before and my phone is decent enough. Once decent 5G phones which aren't the size of a house (suspect physics may be an issue here but I'd like to be proven wrong) come out I'll happily upgrade but for now there is nothing at all in new phones to make me feel I NEED to upgrade. The tech has become stagnant and 5G is the only even slightly revolutionary tech out coming up.
I expect the battle for SIM only contracts to hot up on 4G connections.
I'm on a SIM only with Virgin Mobile (piggybacking EE) getting 65GB for £16 a month. 5000 minutes and unlimited texts also included.
12 month contract, granted, but it makes these look like much worse value.
The cheapest plan was £5 till a couple of months ago (it went up a month after I joined, which was frustrating)
GiffGaff stopped being competitive some time ago. When I switched to them in June 2012, £10 goodybags offered unlimited data and the only difference was in the number of minutes per month (250mins of calls a month was plenty for me). Then they bumped the price up to £12 and having had a look today unlimited data requires a £25 purchase and minutes I simply wouldn't use.
My 5 year old three plan still gives me unlimited data & 300mins a month for £15 - there's nothing competitive with that and from memory three automatically added 4G coverage to all plans for not extra cost. It will be interesting to see what happens when 5G comes around but I struggle to see GiffGaff as being the great value option it once was.
Bring back Orange, best network I ever used, when they became EE they sold off a massive portion of their masts and infrastructure that I find EEs network to be abysmal. Only because I get unlimited everything on Virgin do I stay. Though if they up the price for 5G that's my ticket to drop them now there's plenty of other offers out there.
As a 2nd SIM I use Giffgaff (02), they are ok and often help me out when EE are unavailable. But in my new home I get neither EE nor 02 network I will certainly have to drop one of them soon. Giffgaff being an easier choice as you can do it all on their website. As others have pointed out they're no longer that good value for money.
Currently using giffgaff but it sounds like there are better deals. Whats the most data I can get for £10 on a 1 month rolling contract?
I agree about Orange. I used to be with virgin when they used t mobile and I switched to orange due to lack of coverage. once EE took over signal became crap which forced myself and my parents to switch to O2.
I will be looking at sim only in October once my phone contract comes to an end. my pixel 2 xl is good for updates for at least another year.
I keep getting offered sim only from plusnet as i have internet from them but EE coverage is no good for me. I will most likely use the prices from plusnet to get a cheaper deal from O2.
Currently got gg as my 2nd card, I like that I can stop & start the plans whenever I want.
After just cancelling my 02 contract as it has just come to an end and the upgrade offers were abysmal, I switched to GiffGaff for the freedom of a monthly rolling contract and since they use 02's network my signal coverage does not change.
