Re: Intel previews the Core i9–9900KS at IFA 2019

It's a specially binned 9900k, why all the big hoo hah?

Just like the 8086k a lot of its non binned versions could match performance just fine.

Why is this news, why does it need to be "previewed"?

At least the 8086k was an anniversary chip.

5ghz all-core boost. Yes, but for how long, and what cooling solution will you need?

, further driving home the point that what gamers need is better overall performance, not just higher core counts," asserts Intel.
which is funny given Intel wouldn't be on 8 cores if it wasn't for AMD.

If I had to guess a 360mm or a 480mm rad would do.

I'll be keeping an eye on this..I am itching to upgrade my CPU and despite all the value Ryzen can offer, I can't make a Ryzen upgrade make sense for my use case when the 9900 still wins out in almost all games.

Will wait for some real world tests but this could be the excuse I need to spend the ££. Price dependant of course, it needs to be in the @£450-£480 range to make any sense.

The 9900K is £500 and this is a higher binned one of those. You don't really think its going to be less than that, do you?

Also: it's just a 9900K at 5ghz allcore, benchmarks and comparisons already exist for it!

360mm can cool a car engine, should be up to the task

It's not, its £450-£480 depending on where and when you buy it. Has been a low as £405 on Amazon iirc but couldn't see it for that price from a very quick check...

Does it come with one of the industrial chillers?

This is going to be way to expensive for me + my recently acquired 3700x says don't bother.

It has, and that's when I snapped one up

Yes, the standard 9900K can do all core 5ghz, but it does get toasty. I stuck mine under a 212X which is a bit poo (bracket had to be bent back into shape to seat it at all, poor QA) but have turned off all-core 5ghz which my mobo wanted to run. All core 4700 during AVX is OK, and I set it to 5ghz for 4 cores to allow for game speed. It certainly doesn't need extra voltage these days though, in fact I've undervolted.

Still think a 9700K is faster in real world gaming (should be able to get about 5.3ghz on 4 cores).

I chose the 9700K over the 9900K simply because the performance was on par in games (negligible difference). I have pushed the clocks as well, but it gets toasty like the 9900K when all 8 cores run over 5.1Ghz. Dread to think what TDP the 9900KS is.

Oi, that had nothing to do with Intel's processor. My cat got too close to the thing, caught fire and ran around, igniting the littered used pr0n mags.

Just because a CPU runs a little toasty doesn't mean it starts fires. I just neglected to properly install the optional Intel MSC-6969/FFS#3 (molten salt cooler) and the cat strolled into the Intel DCMCF-8016-IGP3-WTF-CA1/223 dilithium chamber magnetic containment field. Totally mine and the cat's fault. Nothing to do with Intel who recommended perfectly reasonable cooling apparatus, I just cheaped out as I didn't have the full ITER containment kit.

I also note that Intel have simplified their product naming conventions which is handy as my Intel Current Product Inventory Library also burned down. All 18, ceiling high shelves. Gone.

Re: Intel previews the Core i9–9900KS at IFA 2019

My i9-9900k manages sustained 5GHz all core in a laptop chassis (A51M) with ease (custom fan curve), just have to undervolt to keep the thermals in check and then find max stable speed at the lower voltage

Shame i brought a laptop with an upgrade-able cpu and there wont ever be an upgrade for it
