I always felt something fishy going on with this.
Clearly intel just wanted a deeper glance at their competitors technology to make sure their product, which was clearly in the making well before the Radeon collaboration, wasn't released sub par. And if theirs wasn't up to standard, or they had to shelve it entirely, they still had the Radeon to fall back to so a win win.

One thing I wondered was with this and Radeon VII, whether there was an excess stock of HMB memory that needed using up.
