With PCIe 4 coming in to use now and PCIe 6 so close to ratification, surely 5 is dead in the water.

I'd hope so, what is the point fabricating something when the next generation is available (especially when others haven't adopted it in their products yet). Implementations costs alone should mean PCI-E 5.0 is not viable.

Well NvLinks run at less than pci-e 3.0 speeds, so it has always been dead for gaming (Though better than the sli). Single GPU for the consumer is where it'll always be.

Will anything in the next few years be able to utilise this extra bandwidth?

Server-grade storage and network controllers, probably.
More importantly, faster per-lane transfer speeds mean that fewer lanes are required to provide the same bandwidth.

Good point, less saturation of lanes is always a bonus.

simplification of BOM and manufacture. I'm not sure NVME and EPROM is going to keep up (controllers, maybe in time even RAM caches. Give it a decade... )

it all sounds so great ................ and it gets released and it's fab !
...................... then comes the price you have to pay :(
