So we're past renting games, now they're renting phones... What's next?

Selling their phones on a rental basis is the only legal way they can prevent third party repair and keep people locked into their ridiculous ecosystem.
They tried doing it by saying when you "buy" an iPhone, you're not buying it but in fact "leasing" it on a permanent basis. But it never holds up in law because there is no advertising anywhere when you partake in the invitation to treat that you're not in fact purchasing a phone. Leasing requires a contract and in the instances of you purchasing from a store, the contract of sale is complete and nothing further is taken.
As I understand it anyway.
You have to expect a drop in sales when your phone's are over £1000. My iPhone X set me back £999 and you can be absolutely certain about the fact I'll be making it last.
Repairs are such a tiny tiny part of the equation I doubt they'd make such a monumental business decision based on it. Rental is just a good business move at the moment, because it opens the product up to people who have absolutely no way of buying it outright, or just for those who (rightly) baulk at the sticker price. Apple is so far past a piece of tech at this point, and is very much a fashion item, and this'll let more people get it. I am wondering though what that'll do in the long run, as it will dull its status as a status symbol.Originally Posted by Tabbykatze

I, for one, also enjoy the fact that my wife, kids, extended family, and gardener (amongst many, many, many others) can unlock the flagship Samsung phone using fingerprint access.
More seriously though, you're not just paying for the BOM for the phone, but all the R+D and service integrations too.
Sure at the top end they're eyewateringly expensive, but (for many) it's still not that much considering all the stuff it gets used for....
I justified the £999 for my iPhone X by weighing up just what I actually use it for. It gets used all the time, for loads of different things, it's a major source of media. However, it only made sense if I managed to keep it for longer than the usual 2-years that many people stick to, I need this to last at least 4 years. It's done 2 so far and I've not got a single problem, not even with the battery that still easily manages a day, sometimes two.
Apple is already operating a rental scheme in that you pay a small fortune upfront and by year 3 they have slowed the phone down so much with those sneaky software updates it becomes a paper weight. I will never understand why so many pay 1k for a phone it's just madness.
Even if that was true (and it isn't - my kids have iPhone SEs and my old iPhone 6 plus), £1k over 3 years is less than a quid a day. Worth it for me as a media consumption device, satnav, email client, MFA device, backup strava device etc ... oh and a phone....
I still feel £150 for a phone is a lot!

Yeah, the two-year contract is an artificial time scale to renew contracts/sell new phones. Without that most folk would simply keep the phone they have without the "oh, I need the new techs".
My Pixel 1 XL is as fast today as the day I got it in 2016. Great camera, does everything I need, great big screen and still with 80GB of storage. Sod giving these companies any more money than I have to.

It was proven a while back that Apple slows down older phones with software updates. Apple actually owned up to this in saying they did it to help battery life. Go and look it up if you really find it hard to believe, I personally cant believe the balls of the company that actually would own up to such a thing.
As for your pound, a day nonsence advertising companies have been using that quote to make items look much cheeper than they really are the only downside we are paid monthly ( ie £1 a day becomes £28 to £31 / month ) I dont think that is great value when a decent phone capable to doing what you stated can be had for a few hundred pounds.
