I must be missing something. I heard Epic were the epitome of evil, worse than Steam, EA, Google, Apple, Microsoft and McDonalds all combined...?

Quixel that sound like some name i might use in a game.
For the 3 month XGP i used the name Axehalf, which on my part was pretty not creative, just thinking a little viking ( axe ) and old nordic name Halfdan

Steam is not a monopoly and Valve operates in a far more consumer-friendly fashion than Epic, not that this news has anything to do with the Epic launcher.

Just because this is a good move for consumers of the UE4 engine it does not mean this is them now being a great trustworthy company all of a sudden, everyone who isn't using UE4 is going to see a price hike if they want to keep using it. This is more buying up of assets to thwart competition, pretty much like their game exclusive tactics, it is just less hurtful to the end users of THEIR engine and games than what they are doing with the launcher. It looks like some of you have forgotten that they are still trying to strong arm everyone into installing malware if you can't miss out on a game they (and only they) have.

What malware is this, then? Not the "EGS spying on your registry/DLLs" stuff that got bandied around Reddit earlier this year and was generally found to be quite innocent?

Re: Epic Games acquires Megascans maker Quixel

What they should be doing is supporting as many game releases as possible at a competitive price without making third party developed games exclusive to their store, and instead make more in-house games to lure us in instead of relying on dodgy deals and micro transactions from Fortnite.

What they should be doing is working on bringing their launcher up to standard feature wise so that it can actually compete with more functional stores, they also need to at least try and address the china question (what are they doing with our data).

What they should be doing is to bring something to the table that the consumer wants and trusts rather than locking away products and operating in a way many people don't trust at all.

Didn't Valve stop doing in-house stuff once Steam started making loads of money?
As is, I think Epic are about the same price as everywhere else for all the non-exclusive stuff, and all the exclusive/independent stuff nets the dev a higher percentage, doesn't it?

I definitely do recall loads of complaints about Steam being a buggy mess, in the years before it got its act together... How will Epic just do overnight what it took Valve years to achieve?

So far, aside from using your data for spying on Steam, it seems that Epic are generally not doing anything that Steam isn't already...

They seem to have a reasonable customer base in spite of that...
End of the day, few people will ever give up Steam, Origin and all the others anyway, so long as one of them has the game they want. Epic are just securing their own corner of the same market, and attracting devs with good deals as well as offering some nice stuff to their customers.

Wow, I cannot understand why Epic gets so much hate.
Since decade steam couldn't make any improvement in the game library - until recent. I wonder why <rolleyes>.
Steam is handy - yes, but in my opinion is FAR from customer friendly.
Epic wants their share and they plays with market rules. They actually seems to be a little more descent than steam IMHO yet of course they are corporation so they cannot be "good".
I am happy that there are more competition on the games publisher side as this benefits devs (actually big corporations that hires devs but the majority of money goes into the hierarchy/HR/management etc.) and users in the end.

Yeah, another small company get bought up by a giant. How exciting... oh wait! no it's not. Unfortunately it's the way this world works.

So I've not been tempted to buy anything from Epic yet in their store. There's nothing compelling there for me. And Epic are acting like they're the saviour to Steam, while acting like MS/Sony with buying time restricted exclusive deals... a practice I loathe. Also they pretend they're the only completion out there... while GOG and Origin, to name two I use, have been around for longer and actually don't particularly do anything I find loathsome. Also slight tangent, I recently discovered EA Vault through a clever marketing trick (which I worked out as soon as it happened)... where they gave me a month's subscription. But I will probably end up subscribing as there are games there I want to play (unlike what Xbox pass offers currently is - which is pretty poor IMO).

Also, the quality of the Free games have been pretty poor recently. Same are Twitch prime these days... just junk I'll never play.

IMO Epic are drinking too much of their Kool-aid. And some of their practices are questionable and I won't be trusting them or buying anything from them any time soon.

Yes, buying up the smaller stuff, making it free and giving refunds to anyone who'd already paid for it.
    How evil of them.
I'mma go home and burn all my Epic games right now.

GOG are good for old games, but newer stuff is usually just down to whichever platform has a sale on at the time.
Origin have very little worth buying in the first place, so it's hard to stuff that one up. I honestly think I have fewer than 20 Origin games, and that includes all the Mass Effect and Dragon Age stuff!

Well that Kool-Aid came with six Batman games, Subnautica and several others, all of which were free. There's only one game I've actually bought and even then they honoured everything they said regarding it over a year ago, so I've yet to see anything especially questionable...

Steam gets brought up because Epic's whole pitch was about competing against all the things people hated about Steam.

Dude, chill out! You don't need to pick apart every comment! I just stated my opinion about what I've seen Epic do. Clearly you hate Steam, all's I said was that Epic ain't the Savior of all! I'm still not impressed by them.

With regards to the free games, I'm not impressed because I own more games than I'll ever complete. So most of the free games on offer, I already own (Even the free ones that pop up on Humble Bundle). As if I really want a game, I usually buy them. Including the whole Batman series. And Subnautica was one of the first games they gave away... it does not invalidate my point that the quality of the free games are getting worse, just like Twitch Prime (this is just IMO, I know everyone don't have the same tastes as me!).

Also, I was gonna mention that I don't buy all my games from Steam exclusively. I also use Green Man Gaming, Humble Bundle and another similar site to buy my Steam games. Mainly because they're cheaper and they claim to deal directly with the the publishers, not dodgy codes. Not trying to stir up the hornet's nest... just bringing up another option to buy Steam/Epic/Origin games.

Regarding your last statement... this is the Kool-Aid I was talking about. That's their whole PR shtick. And I for one don't believe it till I see it... sorry, but I'm too old to believe PR BS these days. Also I don't believe that a big corporation need fans to defend them. If Epic want to impress me, they can... I'm still waiting...

Just so we're clear, I will buy from ANY legit store that has a game I want. So far what Epic Store has offered, nothing's made me want to buy from there.
