Re: WhatsApp shuts down on Windows 10 Mobile on 31st Dec

So I guess I'm just going to not have a phone. Because there are no other options would never use a Google product. I know it slips into my main system but I try hard to keep it out. Apple might be an option although I would hate myself for. So ideas won't have a phone. I really think when Windows shut down its phone division it missed the ball. If it would've just waited another year till Windows 10 started catching on I think it would win a lot smoother.

So what are MS doing then, given the Surface Neo/Duo and phone capabilities, or are we now at the point with mobile devices where they are powerful enough to Win10 and just add a "phone" app as long as the device has the hardware requirements?

Maybe now we can get back to having a desktop OS designed for the desktop?

Sailfish (jolla) or tyzen (samsung) are an option still.

Nokia 8110 4G runs KaiOS, a "smart feature" OS based off Firefox (I assume the Firefox OS that did the rounds a few years ago). It comes with WhatsApp installed as standard and has an app store (although you can't access it without a KaiOS device, so lord knows what's in there ).

I can't say I'm surprised by this though, apart from perhaps that it's taken quite so long to happen. Been on the cards for over 2 years.

Pretty much that. They've been working on Windows on ARM for that cellular laptop (or whatever they're calling it) concept, and afaict they're pushing for a common kernel between all Microsoft devices. There'll probably be different UI elements and ways of installing applications (I imagine a "phone" version of Windows 10 would only have access to the Store, like Windows 10 S) etc. but the core OS should be the same...

Duo is running on android... Even read that MS gave code to google for some of the dual screen stuff they wanted to do.

Would I have preferred it to be a 'windows lite', probably, I'm not a huge fan of giving google and the likes access to all my personal information (I keep it to the bare minimum anyway) but the duo is what I'd class as business orientated where people might have things like NDA to consider and in all honesty I trust MS a hell of a lot more than google in that respect.

Will we see the duo shift to 'windows lite' at some point, probably depends more on how well neo (which I like a lot) takes off in all honesty.

Ah, yes, good catch - I'd forgotten that

UPDATE: doing a bit more reading around I'm not sure the 8110 *does* have Whatsapp in its store. Seems like there are regional differences in the KaiStore. Rapidly becoming less interested (althoiugh a < £40 feature phone with mobile hotspot is actually tempting regardless of app support...)...

Aren't they another Evil company that steals your data and sells it to China, like Evil Google does?
I'm surprised there isn't a Linux for phones that people can harp on at me about.

Me, I'm still actually using a Windows Mobile phone for work.... well, when I say 'using' I mean it's stuffed in my office drawer. Still current issue, though.

Its a shame windows phones didn't work out, I spent many years with them and would still be using one if it wasn't being killed.

Literally just retired my last windows phone due to this, was an amazing OS which ran perfectly on any hardware.

Re: WhatsApp shuts down on Windows 10 Mobile on 31st Dec

I'm guessing this article is wrapping up Windows Phone news from the last few months. The WP8 store being shutdown was announced a few weeks ago and Whatsapp support ending at the end of the year was announced at least 6 months ago. They've been pretty open about cutting support at the end of the year and Facebook/Instagram support ended in May.

Sailfish is a no go if Whatsapp is needed - I quickly tried it on my XA2 but voice calls don't work. The Jolla forums are full of problems with Whatsapp not behaving correctly.

I switched my primary phone 2 weeks back to a Pixel 3a - far from Google's biggest fan but don't want to spend more than £400 on a phone and wanted a good camera and it's better than the one on my Lumia 950 so I can finally retire it. It's a pity as the Windows Phone version of Whatsapp used the metro design language well and effectively came with a dark mode by default - something the Android app is still lacking.

That and it's still insulting that Facebook can't offer cross-platform restoring from backups for Whatsapp.

Really sad windows phone died, it was an incredibly good ecosystem, I really loved how it synced with my PC, how well it performed and how incredibly nice cameras you got on them. I sadly needed to migrate to Android in 2016 cuz I need banking apps and my bank wasn't supporting windows 10 anymore. But only recently I bought an Android phone that didn't leave me sad cuz I bought a worse overall phone for more money, that was after 3 different phones that I settled with a ZenFone Max Shot that I paid half price for and then Installed a modded Gcam app otherwise it would also not be worth it for me as it is only objectively, marginally better than my old Lumia 830 while costing about 40% more in it's original price.
