Perhaps they'll start releasing 286 and 386 chips again shortly and in turn Microsoft can re-release MS.DOS and not have to bother with continuous botched updates.

I'd like to see the "actual" reason for this, was there actually a need or was it just so they can supply to some OEMs to keep face?

Otherwise, it just looks like the supports are crumbling and someone is quickly running in with a roll of duck tape.

I wonder if it's just to use up fab capacity for idling fabs on large processes? Then they can blackmail / bribe system manufacturers to only use their CPUs and force this polished turd upon them.

To be fair i don't think this is a bad thing having used one of these for the last 5 years for all sorts of tasks including gaming (overwatch, Destiny 2 and even BF1 although it wasn't a great experience lol), it's an OK CPU.
If it frees up space for more 14nm output which in turn should help Intel move on from where they are to much better products then surely thats a good thing?

    You're probably not far off.

AdoredTV just reported Intel to the FTC for not abiding by their settlement terms for disclosure on one side and i'll be quite confident that shenanigans are also happening on the supply side.

That and Intel also just stated in China that a 9600KF is better than a 3800X and a 9100F is better than a 3500X.

Not many tech press seem to want to touch the story even though it seems wholly legitimate.

Doesn't make a huge amount of sense for OEMs, since it isn't socket compatible with anything newer and isn't compatible with DDR4, so anything built using this is bespoke for the CPU and not a variant on your other desktops.

Probably usable as an embedded CPU, but it's supremely inefficient.

No ideas otherwise. Can't imagine there's enough demand for this type of CPU that this is going to release a great deal of 14nm production capacity either.

Embedded CPUs generally need to be cheap, like $5 makes us wince cheap, because we buy maybe 10000 of them at a go and over a product life of 1M units saving a penny per unit matters.

This chip OTOH has ECC enabled. Intel don't make 2 core Xeons, they always just leave ECC enabled on chips like this making them quite popular on low end servers (which require long term availability to be a viable product).

I wonder if this chip is what is being made at Samsung.

"22nm part with 2 cores and no Hyperthreading
    Base freq: 3.2GHz
    Cache: 3MB
    TDP: 53W"

Or you could choose a Ryzen 5 2nd Gen

    "6 core, 12 thread
    Max Boost Clock 4GHz
    Base Clock
    3.1GHz
    Default TDP 45W"

maybe the musk ox is firing them into space on his satellite boxs .. 22nm may be more space and radiation friendly than smaller nodes , plus they are only 5 year lifespan (in orbit). Or army boys need them for missiles/tanks/warships/subs

"AMD's comeback causes a nostalgic wave among fans, increasing sales"...Intel: Hold my beer, we are also going to bring some nostalgia.

Highly unlikely, off the shelf parts are not generally used for those purposes.

Re: Intel 22nm Pentium G3420 gets a reprieve

The problem here is TSMC will be putting out 5nm HVM by H2 2020 latest, and I'd expect it EARLY in H2 as they are ahead of where they were with 7nm at this point in the process. Meaning, 5nm is going better than 7nm was, and Intel seems to be having more issues. WE are going the wrong way for an intel comeback soon. I don't see Intel getting back on top now until after 7nm at best.

Buy AMD stock...LOL. You will double your money in the next 3yrs tops. Try to do that in a fund. MU same story, NV probably the same in the next 3yrs even at today's price. At some point in the next 3yrs you'll get a double on all of these. Heck even if I'm off by a year it's still 25% for 4yrs. I'd be happy with that if I didn't like doing homework. Bang, you're done. Merry Christmas For 3-4yrs. Of course if any of them hit that early, re-evaluate the future I have little doubts they will hit this unless trump is NOT elected again (which will mean back to stupid govt, and end of recovery). If they find a way to stop trump my trading strategy changes massively...LOL. Impeachment delusion this week, who knows next week. It never ends, they just can't handle the loss, nor that they can't WIN 2020.
