A wave? That's one third of the remaining Win 7 users migrated in a month. I know these are pinch-of-salt statistics, but blimey.

Re: Steam breaks concurrent user record with 18.8m gamers

Well i have steam, cuz the one game i have required that to play though it are not even multiplayer.
If i could have installed the game and played it without steam ( and gotten my updates to the game the hard way by looking at the game makers home page )
Well then i would have chosen that as steam are just another thing i don't really need, and i cant see why games need it either as they worked just fine before steam.

I see steam as just another link in the chain, of people wanting to milk & mine you for all you are worth.

That doesn't mean that all, or most, of the people using Steam wouldn't if they had a choice.
I'd be willing to bet against you on that one.

Well it is old now, and so am i, many probably know of nothing else aside for the other similar " services"
I just react very bad when things are forced upon me and i am given no choice, but some things i just cant see as natural progression which i can accept cuz i know things can not remain static either.

Sounds like Douglas Adam's rule #3:

anything that gets invented after you’re thirty is against the natural order of things and the beginning of the end of civilization as we know it until it’s been around for about ten years when it gradually turns out to be alright really.”

Hehe never heard about that one.
And i am also often misunderstood as a tin foil hat wearing technophobe, but really i love much tech, actually now that i no longer work i am doing a little unpaid work helping come companies with some things just to kill time.
But i will not pick up writing about tech / computers again, not even in my native tongue.
Besides all the nice new stuff i can not afford on a pension, well that would just frustrate the hell out of me.
And i am not big on free stuff for reviews, so i call myself a tester / associate developer in the things i work with.

Re: Steam breaks concurrent user record with 18.8m gamers

I think the vast majority of people are aware that a huge portion of those numbers are duplicate accounts and bots (as mentioned)

Valve have felt a great deal of pressure from Epic, thus they have accelerated there project.

The old Steam eco system was "profitable" to have duplicate accounts, these Steam funds went around and around, only decreasing due to "Steam tax".

Valve have been changing greatly in an attempt to not only devalue this already present Steam funds, but increase the input of new real cash.

These changes make it less appealing for the majority of non legitimate accounts(dupes) to participate. Bots will always look for profit until Valve prevent cashouts/ trading.

At the moment Valve offer a far superior service, mostly, when they can be bothered.

Epic though offer, much better value.

Re: Steam breaks concurrent user record with 18.8m gamers

The only real problem with Steam et all is the locked in nature. If you can pick a platform and move all your games between them that would be fantastic. Separate the store from the content-delivery network.

The problem is, there is no money in delivering content to users if you're not selling it as well.

Which means, you tend to land up with a bunch of apps updating different apps, and if one of them goes belly up, your library becomes worthless. Steam has been around long enough that hopefully that won't happen.

There are though a lot of advantages to Steam etc. I'm not sure I'd want to go back to stacks of discs kicking about the house (which I still have, but never pick up any more).
