    Hmm, I wonder about that.

The earliest laptops I've used (386 era) went from 10.x" inch to 12.1" (sometime monochrome). Laptops with 12.1" TFT were expensive for their time.

Then 13.3" screens came and superseded 12.1" as the top end option.

And so on. Mainstream just keeps getting bigger for a while, until top end mainstream hit 17". Yet what is mainstream as a desktop monitor has increased in size from the time the first 17" laptop came out.

I have a nagging suspicion that the sweet spot for most people are what is commonly found today. If there was a huge demand for 20+" laptops, I think that it would've been done, and with economy of scale, would be more affordable. Just as how the largest mainstream screens went from 12.1" to 17".

Most people will not want to lug around a 17"+ behemoth. Any serious gamer will have a desktop PC with ma-HOO-sive monitor, svvanky keyboard, glitzy mouse and loverly swivel chair. If they're going mobile, it's because the desktop is too cumbersome to carry, so why would they carry a similarly awkward laptop that doesn't even compare in terms of performance benefits?

He's a tech-head, enthusiast, hobbyist overclocker (but has held a few records before), competitive gamer and several other things that greatly justify such a level of interest in these things... and at the time laptops were advancing so fast that last years model could be generations behind in terms of tech. That kind of obsolescence is totally unacceptable to an enthusiast, particularly one who can always afford the latest kit.

He's since had some disappointing experiences and reached a point of diminishing returns with the likes of MSI, so no longer goes completely nuts. He's actually started focussing on doing up his desktops again, and is working on refurbing his original Amiga 1200.

Unique product, very niche market and first of its kind, guaranteed high price.
But then, Linus did a build the other day with just off-the-shelf (albeit all top-of-the-line) parts, that still cost summat like $20,000, so perhaps not as insane as you'd first think?

So they found the price didn't suit them. Still counts...

As someone who is usually on the losing end of that marketing, I would concur...
For example, I tried finding a simple pocket romer recently, that just needed two scales, compass markings and the numbers the correct way round. I might find one, or maybe two of those elements, but never all of them, despite it having existed previously and being immensely popular.
My only option is to have some custom printed (it's only a credit-card sized piece of clear plastic, for flip's sake) at much more than the £1.75 they used to cost.

    Marketing-driven markets suck.

A very fair point. I guess it boils down to me trying to find an excuse for me to have a laptop at some point in the future, despite the fact that I'm not mobile enough for it to actually be necessary and thus wouldn't get used often. Given how quick things would go out of date, especially when compared to desktops, I'd probably be kicking myself for the cost of such an unnecessary item that never got used anyway.

Some more fair points, I hadn't thought of it from that angle. I had been thinking from the previous description that he sounded more along the lines of the stereotypical gamer with more money than sense.

Clearly that is not the case.

Another fair point. I saw that LTT video too, the fact that they call it the Compensator (3) though obviously shows that they are fully aware that it's not a realistic prospect for most people. But as you say, that too is a unique product, niche market, and very high price.

But then again, most wouldn't have any actual need for such an item anyway except for epeen. So I guess it's better to live vicariously through Linus on things like this anyway.

I guess the best anyone can do is hope that they are lucky enough that their needs' timings coincide as much as possible with markets happening to offer something that either matches of is close enough to their requirements.

If it doesn't, they will obviously have to decide upon a different approach (such as your own custom-made one or making do with the closest thing they can find). But life can be all about compromise, so once again it's not like this would be a situation unique to anything in particular.

No, he is both of those things too... some of the time, at least. You don't want to know how many mice he's bought and then decided he didn't like or replaced with another even better one!

Lürssen mega-yachts aren't for most people, either... mainly because of what they cost.
Classic example of want (and can afford) over what you might actually need.

Yet another fair point. In all honesty? Not particularly as I prefer knowing that I've got plenty of grunt at my disposal with my more easily-upgradable desktop (especially with my upgrade to the Ryzen 3950X not so long ago).

It's more scenarios of unlikely "What If"s that had me thinking what I'd want if I somehow found myself with a need to have an alternative option. If such an unlikely scenario came to pass though, I guess I'd have to bite the bullet and choose then, as there's obviously no point when I definitely don't have any such need.

On the plus side, potentially reduced price or free upgrade options for yourself as a result?

I bought a Netbook way back in 2005-ish. Runs XP. 10" screen, nothing special, could just about run Freelancer but struggled with Tomb Raider: Legend.
But it was my computer for a good while, very small and handy, very easily portable especially on a motorcycle. I kept it, mainly for nostalgia...
The other week I had to complete gut my 'office' so the electrician could get under the floors to rewire part of the house. This meant no PC and no access to any of my files and 'stuff'... But I was still able to fire up that Netbook and watch The Witcher, without resorting to squinting at a smartphone screen!

If you want one, get one. You never know when you'll have the need.
I'm currently mucking about, seeing if I can get Win10 or some kind of Linux/Ubuntu thing to run on it!

No, the mice he keeps and the laptops go to other, more needful folks.
However, desktop components are another matter... Why do you think a poor boy like me has as nice a spec as that in my profile over there on the left!!

As I said, it was mainly "What If"s that had me thinking. As I really don't actually want a laptop, I'm hoping such a need never comes up, but as I said - if it does, I'll have to make a decision at that point. Although hopefully there would be an option that involves me just taking my desktop setup with me and still being able to use that instead somehow.

The desktop components are probably the best portion of it to be able to get anyway.

Depending on what you use your laptop for it will never be outdated in many cases.
My need would be served fine by a quad core CPU and a build in GFX, cuz i would only need it for what i do right now, general net surfing.
I would not game - edit videos or anything demanding on a laptop, why the hell would i sit under a tree and do lame stuff like that when i can do that at home in my comfortable chair and much faster.

Of course if you are the kind of person that have a fruitphone 10 and there is a 11, and you go get that, then there is a problem, but then its probably with you and not the hardware.

I would love one of these for when I am going on holiday. I already can play a bit of Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 on the integrated graphics of my SKL based laptop, and this is smaller and more powerful.

    A fair point.

If I ended up with a laptop, I'd probably want it to be gaming-capable just in case I fancied doing a bit of gaming - obviously that would push the potential cost up though, unless I decided I was happy enough to stick with older games that wouldn't take much power of a non-gaming modern laptop's capabilities. As I said, hopefully I won't encounter such a situation anyway and my desktop will always be available.

I can say I'm definitely not that type of person. I prefer hardware (whether phone or otherwise) that can last as long as possible rather than upgrading constantly just because a new version has been released.

Which is exactly why I chose a 3950X, 32GB RAM, and (X570) Motherboard with PCIe4 for my Ryzen build, as hopefully it should future-proof things as much as posssible so any upgrades that become necessary are as far into the future as possible.
