    Free games always good.
ISTR getting Rayman free quite recently, though I can't for the life of me recall how or when... Was it on Epic?

They are always good *unless* its from Epic, given it helps support their anti consumer, shady business practices.

Rayman has been free from Ubi a few times and it's been given away on a few other sites recently (think Humble had it at one point). Its a fun platformer imo, particularly if you grew up with the originals. Good on them for this, particularly for titles that are more popular with younger members of the family.

So perfectly fine when Steam/Uplay/Origin use it to support their anti consumer, shady business practices, then... OK, gotcha.

to my knowledge, they have never bribed a development house for an exclusive that was previously open to all storefronts and shops. First party games are a different kettle of fish all together which is generally the case with exclusives on those stores.

You buy games from wherever is cheapest. Devs sell their games to whoever offers them the most money. Don't see the problem, myself... and it clearly didn't do consoles any harm.

Thats one of the key points. If Epic are only going to sell a particular game themselves and they set the (typically very high) price, there is no option as a consumer to buy from anyone else.

The way the console market is (and always has been) structured is really, really bad for consumers - but even then its slightly better than what Epic are trying to do as whilst you may be tied to a piece of hardware, you at least have a choice of retailer. With Epics exclusivity rubbish going on, you don't. One (r)etailer, one price, zero choice, zero competition.

All Epic had to do was start to sell games on their platform at a reduced price, capitalising on Fortnite to draw people in...and then start the free games etc as an additional way in - everyone is a winner.

It's the underhand tactics of buying up exclusives and trying to create a console like market that is the problem for consumers. You may not see much of an impact now, but give it a few years...

So far I'm not seeing prices any higher than they'd have been elsewhere. I don't even think there are any over £50, TBH... well, £49.99.
Arguably some are far less than expected.

This isn't about consumers, though. Epic are about the devs and since several studios have gone under while others failed to the point where they were easily bought out, both to the detriment of the players who could no longer play their games, I can see the benefits.

Until a year later when Steam gets it, and likely makes a fortune from putting it on sale like they do with everything anyway.....

I don't give a flying fig about Fortnite and I would question whether Epic (and indeed all those others who tried and failed) could afford to undercut Steam on price and still stay afloat.

It's the computer and gaming industry. Just about everything is underhanded. How often have we seen Intel, AMD and Nvidia controversies over them stabbing each other in the back?

Re: Ubisoft's month of free games starts with Rayman Legends

I care about the consumer choice though...so it is about consumer in my opinion. Epic clearly think Steam takes too much of a cut (And I don't disagree with that..) so they give publishers more. Great. They had an alternative - give developers more than steam, but slightly less than they do now, and use that extra % to discount sales.

All my criticism of Epic is from a consumer perspective and the basics are a free(ish) market. With most games, I can choose to buy them on Humble, GOG, Steam, even Origin these days....but with an epic exclusive, I can only buy it from epic. That helps no one except epic (and publishers. Have to remember that the developers often dont see any benefits here, the publishers get the lions share of the benefits, the developers get the hate)

It ain't about you, the consumer, though.
I see it the same as Humble charging the same price as Steam, but giving a cut to a charity of your choice.
The consumer's option in this regard is whether to make Gabe Newell even richer, or to help the Dog's Trust...

Too bad that they would flop if they went that route. It seems odd that Epics exclusives are treated like a massive deal when you can still play the game on the same platform. Yet exclusives for console or even ios/android (although technically more open) people don't bat an eye or in some cases, support exclusives.
