There's been rumours that the Surface Book 3 might soon be due to launch as well.
If so, I'll be watching closely to see if Panos Panay has had the good sense to get his team to refine the design to avoid the cracked screens that afflicted the first two iterations.
Even just a minimal rubber lip or some spacer pads would make sense given the significant price tag of this otherwise impressive device.
Purchased an 8GB/128GB Go at launch in August 2018 - I've been pretty happy with it and I can't think of anything better in the £400-600 range. tbh I don't think the keyboard is essential but it definitely makes the device more usable under moderate use.
The one criticism is the CPU - the Gold simply isn't up to the job when running more than 20 browser tab, despite having the same amount of RAM as my i7 Skylake HP Spectre laptop, it's definitely a compromise. Benchmarks show the Skylake m3 I have in my Intel Compute Stick as being twice as fast as the Gold. I'm hoping that the Coffee Lake model would be close to being a full laptop replacement for a consumption device.
Yeah I'd be expecting a new Surface Book given the discounts on the old model..
"the Gold simply isn't up to the job when running more than """"20"""" browser tab" - Well, who knew that a low end cpu wouldn't be up to THAT task!?! Your comment did make me giggle.
Don’t think I’ll ever purchase a Surface ever again, after being stung with a 3 and 5 which overheat, randomly lockup and decide to stop working if you so much as stare at them for too long. The 5 was sent back under warranty but came back with all the issues supposedly fixed except that they weren’t.
My device of choice is now Dell, maybe not as sleek looking but at least they work.
I miss my Surface 5 since I sold it, the missus got a Laptop 3 a few days later and I have a laptop for work, but I kinda miss it anyhow...
I've started having some issues too; my launch-day SP4 i7 has recently developed the well-known "flickergate" problem (screen jitter that creeps in as the Surface gets warm and then gets steadily worse until you have to switch it off to cool down) after years of good, reliable service. I can usually delay the jitter by under-volting the CPU/GPU, but the results vary depending on the workload.
Torn on what to do about this - I do a lot of illustration work and the Surface Pro is way more practical than the previous Laptop + Cintiq 13HD combo (the huge snakes-nest of cables was a nightmare, especially when working away from home).
Other options (Dell, iPad Pro + Pencil, Surface Book 2) all seem to have their own snags as well - when what I need is a general-purpose device that I can draw, work and develop on.
There was a recall/service return on the 4's within warranty, check it out if you are still in warranty or not.

Thanks for the suggestion Trig - I had looked into this. Bit of a bummer that my Surface Pro 4 is out of warranty. But this still leaves an option to pay £500ish to Microsoft for an "out of warranty exchange". Sounds like that money has gotten other people in my situation a refurbished Surface Pro 5. Debatable whether a better deal could be had on eBay or whether to develop butter-fingers and make a claim on the household insurance (the excess is lower and there's a new for old policy).
Shame Microsoft don't offer a reasonable discount on a current-gen Surface Pro 7 - that'd probably buy some loyalty back.
Oh I'd love it if they did a trade in, would have made my life easier..
Changed jobs and the new place gave me a laptop, so rather than it sit and get old not being used, I sold it..
If it had been a Gen 6/7 then I would have probably kept it due to the later generation i7 and 4c/8t rather than the weakassed version..
Although the exchange scheme is tempting I decided personally that they won’t be getting any more of my custom and money.
Their level of CS is also shocking, I sent a surface off for repair and they returned a surface of a lower spec than what I had sent and what they sent had a screen that was delaminating/ yellowing in the corners. Took me ages to even convince them that what they had sent was a lower spec device.
Pretty shocking that a high-tech firm in the premium space can get the customer service this wrong.
You don't expect to be bitten by manufacturing faults and then screwed over further by shonky refurbs & incompetence!
I've taken a look at the latest HP Spectre x360's - sounds like these are very nice - but there are mutterings about HP's hinge mechanisms developing faults several months down the line.

I never had any issues with Microsoft when it comes to in warranty hardware...
