    What else comes with this refresh though, are they still on the same process or are they just the same chips, on the same process but with a bit more eeked out of them due to better and more efficient manufacture?

    As I understand it, they'll be different bins of the same silicon. Perhaps a different stepping but I've no idea if that would be the case here. As you say the maturity of the process/improved yields can help to lift clocks.

    I think these are high bin chips too, they're likely far enough along that they're producing more epyc quality dies than they need so some of those will be filtering down to the Threadripper and Ryzen lines

    Now that the price of the 3900x is around $400, they can ask another $50 for the slightly faster
    XT version.
    Much like Intel did with the recent Comet Lake release - but still be significantly better as a value proposition.
