This is clever idea from Microsoft. Sure, 4k would be nice but i'd argue most kid's bedrooms (and quite a few front rooms) have only got 1080p. If they do a deal where you get game pass (the game download service which personally I think is great) and the console for say £30 a month for 2 years, it could prove quite popular.

I'd say the opposite. 4k TVs have been very cheap for a while now and they're larger than their 1080p predecessors which is a big incentive for your average consumer. Unless the TV had been bought more than 5 years ago it's probably not going to be 1080p, and certainly an upgrade would be due over this generation.

It could also be that lockhart is designed around the idea of it being used for xcloud rather than being a pure console in the strictest sense of the word. Dev's still need to know how it would look/perform if remotely streamed via the xbox based game servers etc.

MS are going to start pushing the 'streaming' side of things soon, so what better way to promote it than a low cost device they can throw in for cheap or even free if you sign up for 12-24 months of xcloud. Throw in the ability for it to install 'basic' apps like say netflix etc and it's quite a compelling little device for some households imo.

Would be pretty funny if the Series S is as fast as the PS5 and a chunk cheaper.

Huh? There are plenty of 1080p TV's on sale, today. There are even still 720p TV's on sale, today.

They're all fundamentally the same hardware, there's not going to be an exciting difference like that.

Great idea by MS. Lots of broadcast content is still 1080p,so TVs can do decent upscaling already. Considering the economic problems which are going to be happening over the next year,it means families have a cheaper option to choose from.

I have Game Pass, I only have 1080p screens in the house, the Lockhart is a great idea for people like me if I decide to get a console.

Very interested in the potential price.

You're kidding? Most kids get the hand me downs and I don't know anyone currently that has a 4k tv as a second tv

Its nice to have a choice, an example my son is starting to get into gaming and is getting a 'spare parts' pc with will be an overclocked 8320 + R9 290, this will be fine for the games he wants to play and resolutions good enough to see.

Compared to my PC it is very much a lockhart PC, it can play the same games as mine but at lower quality.

Likewise even if he gets a new TV to which its hard not to get a 4k one now, it will still look fine doing 1080p gaming.

Not everyone can afford or justify the cost of top end gaming but now rather than being stuck with the previous generation console with game support dropping you can have a cheaper current console with all the new games.

Really I don't own or even feel the need to own a 4K tv... considering the distance I am from the tv and the fact that the tv is still working fine and does everything I want from it why would I waste money on a 4K tv now, especially knowing that 'cheap' 8K tv's aren't far off.

Not to mention in most cases you also need to upgrade other aspects of your kit to fully make use of 4K etc...

Your household might be different but I wouldn't be giving any children, or expected it myself when I was younger, 'better' items than the main living space, hell I wouldn't even spend the same on a tv for the bedroom as I would the living room and that's ignoring the fact I *couldn't (just found Samsung do one) get a 4K screen small enough to fit where the tv goes upstairs.

I can see them offering a cut down console.

What it is a combination of is yet unclear.

It's likely one of the below though:

Digital only
Smaller hard drive
Streaming / XCloud
60fps

You can push 'next gen' graphics at 1080p with lessor (and cheaper) graphical hardware and some people will buy. The same reason we don't all own 2080ti's.

It was a great idea to call it Xbox, just box, don't need to rethink shape every time.
